Honestly, Nieto would have been great for this US team. Wheels, chemistry with Coyle/Clendenning, and top-notch finishing.

Well, if we're looking for a Holmstrom-wannabe (IOW a guy who hangs out in front of opposition net), it might be Nieto.

Watching BU @ ND. Nieto is spending a lot of time near the blue paint.

(With the loss of Coyle & the other player who left, BU looks to be reeling with trying to find a new chemistry to get a decent offensive effort going.)

Nieto could definitely use some "size" and strength to stick in the zone (and be more of a threat).

Joel Armia of Finland just trolled the Swedes hard.

EDIT: ridiculous end to the Sweden/Finland game. First the Fins choke away a 2-0 lead, and then in the shootout, Mikael Granlund loses the puck on the way to the net. He just lets it roll away from his stick while moving in on net.

Armia was funny. lol

Too bad it had to end like that for Granlund. He'll have better days.

I don't wanna make a whole thread for this, but could someone explain to me how we have such a good NHL team when so few of the guys competed in the World Juniors?

On TV, they keep bringing it up as valuable experience, but I guess it's not that important. Anaheim even sent DSP to the WJC and he got hurt. (They could use the NHL help too.) Not such a good experience there...

Is this whole thing overrated? or are we lucky to have so many late bloomers?

My (somewhat) biased opinion is that the PTB who select for the WJC teams are looking at recent/current offensive production of the skaters, and sometimes makes their decision based on what is best for their "home" team (e.g., Anderson wasn't selected for WJC as his coach was behind Team Canada's bench).

And I'm thinking there's a lot of politics (which the Sharks refuse to play) so that sometimes the best players aren't necessarily selected.

Also realize, that the Sharks have 1-3 guys drafted in the top CHL/NHL rounds every year, so that what they value highly, others may not.

And the Sharks try to go with the long view on players not just the "what have you done for me lately" results.

Armia maybe went a bit overboard with that move but he probably tried to make the swedes think about that and not winning the game.

And we didn't choke. The swedes were better the whole game (and they always, or atleast usually come up clutch against us, and most of the time at the last minute), Aittokallio had like +50 saves or something and kept us in the game though he gave up that 2-2 goal .

The refs were horrible. No calls on Sweden whatsoever, the non call on the too many men at OT was the last nail for me.

I feel bad for Granlund. The finnish media is gonna ****ing crucify him tomorrow.

A little of both. There are tons of WJC guys who never amount to anything and tons of players who don't make it that end up being damn fine NHLers.

Still, the team does have a decent # of players that played for their world junior teams.

Handzus
Havlat
Marleau
Sheppard (if he counts)
Thornton
Burns
Niittymaki
Greiss

and if you count prospects, then Stalock, Sateri, Viedensky, Hamilton, and Abeltshauser too.

Couture also would've likely gone at least once if not for getting mono. Nieto and Petrecki's omissions from the US team in their years was also a bit puzzling.

For a team drafting usually in the latter half of the 1st round and being far less likely to draft Europeans than most, that's not bad.

I guess we've had a few good ones. In my head, i didnt think of Thornton or Burns (actually a lot of those guys came from other teams) as one of our guys but they are big parts of our NHL team.

Maybe Couture is one that could/should have been there at the time. Pierre McGuire brings that up a lot. I think Nieto would have been 2nd or 3rd on to the team - with Shane Prince making such a big deal out of himself being left off, and Jared Knight who gets brought up a lot as a snub.

Like LS said, I have heard that whole long-term view coming from San Jose and I could see that being a good reason for this.

Thanks for the replies. It's still weird to me how we could have such a low number of guys there (18-19 YO) and have such good team. Most years it is like this too.
