Fanspeak: Martin St. Louis voted greatest Lightning in franchise history

all right who voted for MSL?

"This summer, NBC Sports’ social media team is conducting the #NHLGreatest initiative, designed for fans to choose the best player in each franchise’s history. Balloting was conducted through three platforms — Facebook, Twitter and Instagram — with thousands of votes being cast. The results of this initiative will be released throughout the month of August, in conjunction with PHT’s Team of the Day series.

Tampa Bay Lightning

1. Martin St. Louis (820)
2. Steven Stamkos (399)
3. Dave Andreychuk (185)
4. Vincent Lecavalier (166)

The Lightning drafted two high-profile centers first overall (Stamkos and Lecavalier) and employed a different player who won a Conn Smythe Trophy (Brad Richards), yet fans voted undrafted forward Martin St. Louis as the greatest Lightning player ever.

It would be interesting to see how differently fans might vote after, say, five more years of Stamkos* … but right now, St. Louis is an easy choice even after his painful trade-related divorce from last season.

In 13 seasons with the team, St. Louis scored 953 points in 972 regular season games (a franchise record), scored 68 points in 63 postseason contests (another franchise record) while collecting one Hart and two Art Ross trophies. He was a huge part of the team’s lone Stanley Cup victory and also helped the Bolts come within one win of a second Stanley Cup Final appearance in 2011.

Beyond that, St. Louis was a consistent performer in a franchise that seemed to experience lows that were just as dramatic as the peak moments (and more bleak than bright ones in that). The 39-year-old seems likely to get booed the next time he plays in Tampa Bay, yet it is a virtual certainty that his No. 26 will be raised to the rafters one day."

I don't like him, but he is. Fortunately, the current captain has the means to pass him given time.

Flawed pole like Dewy wins presidency prediction, because they phoned people, but a minority had phones. Huge bias as not everyone uses Facebook, Instagram, twitter etc

There are 3 names on that list, that DESERVE to be there.

You can leave a team you've been at for 15 years, and still be there best player. But you leave on the right terms. Even if you don't "like" your situation, you man up and deal with it for the remaining X months.

Had he left in the off season, I'd still be proud to wear 26. He lost his right to even call himself a Bolt in my opinion...

If you factor in his Lightning career up until the Team Canada 2014 rosters, then he is. If you include the turbulent months after that, he definitely is not.

Regardless, I think it's Vinny right now. Will be Stamkos very soon.

I think it may happen but it's not a certainty. Much like Paul Kariya in Anaheim I don't think MSL gets his jersey retired until everybody involved (Cooper, Yzerman, Vinik) are long gone.

This. Anybody ahead of Lecavalier is a joke. Even if St. Louis didn't leave the way he did, nobody did more for the lightning on and off the ice then Vinny.

Personally I think there was more to why MSL wanted traded that what we know. I do think that he is one of the greatest who has ever skated for the TBL. I am hopeful that this list will change drastically if asked 5 years from now.

It could very well be but if it wasn’t for selfish reasons why not just say so, I mean he doesn’t have to reveal everything but he could have said something to try and save his legacy here if it ever meant anything to him.

I really can’t help but wonder if him leaving had something to do with Yzerman but not in a way that is Yzerman’s fault, I mean there is only a 10 year age difference between them so they have obviously played against each other in the past and maybe it could be one of those “when a colleague becomes your boss” – situation that might have been hard for MSL to handle form the beginning and not being picked for Team Canada could have been the last straw…

oh well, who cares, the likelihood of the Rangers being able to re-sign him to a big contract after next year is small to non anyway and if you look at what the fans say they mostly don’t want him there after next summer if it runs a risk of them not being able to re-sign the players that will also become UFA’s then.

The statement just needs a modifier: Martin St. Louis is unfortunately the best player in franchise history.

This.
Are we basing it solely off of statistics? I think that should play a factor but not be the only factor. How about loyalty to the team? Longevity? What has been done for the community?

I'm still just as pissed as I was a few months ago about the entire situation.

Doesn't take away from the fact that he is actually the greatest player in Lightning history. I'm not really understanding the logic of including off-ice accomplishments, they aren't asking for the nicest guy in franchise history. They're asking for the best hockey player. That's MSL, not really any debate.
