Where is Mikko Koivu?

3 points (all assists) in 8 games.

He's been relatively quiet with the new toys we've gotten over the summer. I'm not going to say it's because he got a contract extension because that's not Koivu at all but for a guy that was playing with Miss the Net Again and Brunette, it's kind of interesting to see Koivu's production go down.

He tore it up in 2010-2011 with 11 points in 10 games and 12 points in 14 games in 2009-2010.

So what's up with him?

I know Yeo is a new coach and has a new system but Koivu always seemed adaptable and quick to learn new styles.

And he had a solid pre-season with Heatley and Setoguchi.

We need him to snap out of his funk. He's the captain of this team and is one of the leaders.

Could be worse. Eric Staal has 4 points in 8 games, but is -10, worst in the league.

But he better get his s#it together soon

I wonder if Koivu is subconsciously playing a more finesse game because he is with skilled linemates now.

The entire top line has been checked off the puck really easy and that is normally Koivu's strong point.

I've also noticed that atleast some of the time Heatley has been the one sent down low to work the puck out of our zone, I don't know if thats because he does an adequate job at it and they want him trailing the breakout into the offensive zone with his shot. That has been Koivu's responsibility for as long as I can remember here.

its still early...the first period of saturday's game should provide enough hope that this team is still learning. They'll eventually start making the shots they were making in the preseason and it'll be okay..

the tricky part will be this transition into november with detroit twice and vancouver once again...

I think that he's learning the habits of the other first line players. I'm sure that Heatley and Seto have much different positioning than Bruno and Mittens did.

Wow.. another topic about Mikko?

Koivu played 3 years with Brunette and Miettinen, in a very different style of play as well. Now since Seto and Heater play a different way, it may take some time as he looks like a slow learner, but eventually he is going to be a "scoring menace" again.

I think the most encouraging thing that can be said about Mikko's play has been his random entries into "eff you" mode where he takes the puck end to end and just does something all by himself. It always sparks the team (which is more important than just playing well himself) and occasionally even leads to a goal. I think Mikko's trying too hard to be a playmaker, and needs to just accept that he needs to do things himself. He's used to teams ignoring his linemates and focusing just on him. Now teams are focusing on Heatley and Setoguchi, so he needs to be a bit more selfish to even things back out.

yeah, we didn't see that enough last year. Beast mode Koivu is an awesome sight to behold.

I have been very disappointed with his play so far this year. He seems to be playing very slow and passive. But we just need to understand its early and he is adjusting like everyone else. I wish this adjustment period would be over so we could see some real chemistry but its hard. Maybe swap Koivu and Cullen. Cullen has been playing great this year and it could jumpstart Koivu. I'm sure him Guillaume and PMB would be great. Cullen is so speedy and putting him alongside Gucci would be a nice site to see.

Seto forgive me, but a line of Gui-Koivu-Heater would be awesome. Also, i agree that Koivu need to be more selfish and forget the PMB sindrome.

I've been pushing to see Lats on the top line as well, but that's a seriously slow line. I'd like to see them take offensive zone faceoffs when we're at home and the other team can't just put a speed line out though.

Slowly skating through the neutral zone just in time to see the other team get possession of the puck and break it out the other way?

If Lats is gone for a stretch, it's going to be trouble. Koivu-Heatley don't have the speed to match up against a top shutdown pairing. Seto is a bad fit on that line. I would like to see them play with Bouchard or maybe Lats.

It seems like Yeo wants Koivu's line out against other top lines, which I think is a mistake. On home ice he should go for mismatches and put Brodziak's line out vs. the other teams top lines.

BTW, I just read through the entire "Strip Koivu of the C" thread on the Wild.com message boards. I don't think he's been as bad as that.

Is he? Looking through the stat sheets there's a pretty even mix of Koivu, Cullen, and Brodziak when Yeo has the last change, but more Koivu in the offensive zone. Obviously if you are in the O zone and the other team throws out the top line, not a lot you can do.

He also couldn't pair well with Havlat...

On the ice? In the Twin Cities? At dinner? I don't know, I'm not his keeper.

Not much we can do but hope to god he turns it around. If he doesn't things will get even uglier than the 8 game losing streak last year.

Yeah, it was CT*(RIP)'s friend.

That was amazing. Wish I could find the picture in one of the OT threads.

Me too. I'm a freshmen in Peterson Hall. Gotta say I haven't met many hockey fans here at all yet. Couple of people in my FYSEM didn't even know who Wayne Gretzky was.

Koivu has zero goals in his last 17 games... this is concerning to say the least.

He got some pre-season goals, don't worry they'll come.
