16 teams make the playoffs. We finished 13th in the league last season. We were fortunate to have played in a weaker conference... Circling the wagons in the playoffs can't mask deep structural problems that are bound to resurface.

We got lucky when Halak decided to channel Patrick Roy until Philly reeled us back down to earth. While it will forever remain purely speculative on my part. I firmly believe Gainey never walked away so much as he was told to because management had enough respect to not fire him publicly.

Koivu should never have been allowed to walk. No, instead we abandon one of the most dedicated players we have had, to acquire Scott frigging Gomez and are stuck paying his overpaid and worthless ass, while McDonagh shines in New York. If the irony wasn't apparent already, he's a defenseman. I'm not completely faulting Gainey because you are correct, Gauthier has had ample team to rectify our problems and instead only repeated the endless cycle of mistakes by leaving Hamrlik and Wisniewski to walk away. That said, this mess still originated from Gainey. Gauthier simply has done nothing to fix it.

Sigh, regardless of who we pass the blame to, something needs to happen soon or we might as well campaign for Nail.
I agree with a lot of your points and lost a lot of respect for Gainey when he let Koivu walk. But...

Gainey took over in 2003/2004.

The year before (02/03) we missed the playoffs with 77 points. The early 2000's and late 90's were absolutely pathetic for the Habs. Setting the bar for new low year after year. Meanwhile Gainey had turned the Stars into one of the leagues top teams year in and year out. His first year as GM with the Habs we made the playoffs with 93 points. In his 6 seasons, we only missed the playoffs once (on the last game of the regular season).

We finished first in the East, we made the Eastern conference final.

Gainey has an pretty spectacular track record, something that can not be said for Martin or Gauthier.

Sure Gainey made mistakes, and sure some of them are still relevant today. But this man has not be GM for a while. Anyone after watching the game tonight who is pointing a finger at Gainey is absolutely clueless. Only their ignorance is stopping them from seeing themselves as an embarrassment to Hab fans. In the same sense that people who ridiculed Koivu year in and year out should be embarrassed

It's beginning to look like the wrong moves were made over the summer. Hammer's experience is sorely missed. The Wiz would be a welcome addition right now. And Muller seemed to provide some spark for the boys; they just look a little flat under Martin.

Yes. It seems the habs defence plays for him too but won't play hard for price.
I wonder if Price is bad in the locker room?

just rotten ****ing luck
they do responsible for the injuries, may not all, but most of it.

I think we played a great team game.
Lots of energy, great forecheck, lots of physical play.

Nokelainen and Blunden added a lot.
Spacek played well.
Budaj was solid.

There's really not much to criticize except some soft plays by Cammy.

The main problem was offensive zone faceoffs.
We lost a ton of them after FLA iced the puck.
We have to capitalize on those types of plays.

PP still needs work but Cole added a lot.

We were one good bounce away from winning.
Their winning goal was a deflection.
Unlucky for us.

Either way it doesn't look good, either he was shown the door or he bailed immediatly after signing a pile of long term contracts. Really looks like he had zero faith in the team he built in one manic offseason. If he had every intention of leaving he should have let the new GM build the team, he is still very much to blame for todays circumstances.

You have to remember this was the Panthers. We will see what happens when they play a contender like Boston or Philly. I'm scared about what will happen to this team.

Gainey set all this in motion when he looted our farm for one of the worst contracts in the league.
A bubble team!? 2 years ago they made the conference final. Last year they took the Cup champs to game 7 OT (3 of their 4 losses were in OT). This seems like a contender to me. PG needed to take this team forward with smart moves, instead he has gone sideways at best.

It's become clear his first big move needs to be firing Martin and if he isn't prepared to do that, I think it's time to look for a new GM.

I hope that we are not going to do something stupid.

Hiring a bad coach or doing a stupid trade.

Well, if we lose the next 2 to 3 games, start thinking long term? Fire Martin, change up the coaching staff, start indoctrinating the youngsters to play according to whatever new system the incoming staff decides upon, and, likely, get a great draft pick to add to the core.

So basically what your saying is if we get lucky bounces for the rest of the season then all is well?

Why is it that every game we play a "tough" goalie playing out of his mind but our top 5 goalie in the league can't steal a game? There is something wrong in the room....
