No, I'm pretty sure Falardeau has a pro contract now.

There's rumors that they need to get him under contract because the talk is he really doesn't have a role on next year's Michigan State team.

With every passing season I just *love* this pick more and more.

Someone did the sales job of a lifetime to get this kid taken where he was.

We as Ranger fans must find the man who scouted Michigan State for 2002, and castrate him.

Eh, a 2nd round pick who's a bust? Heads must roll you say?

Bah.

Most 2nd rounders never even get close to the NHL. Take a look at Hockeydb.com's draft year archives if you don't believe me.

So Falardeau sucks . . . I'm dissapointed, but it's not like I'm going to loose any sleep because the Rangers got a lousy prospect 33rd overall in a very weak draft year. Wes Javis sucked. David Inman sucked. Filip Novak still hasn't made the NHL. Randy Copley, Daniel Goneau, Rudolf Vercik, and Lee Sorochan sure haven't done much with their respective careers. All Rangers 2nd round picks. . . and before anyone starts yelling about a lousy draft record, check out those draft archives again. The Rangers are actually a pretty good 2nd round drafting team. (Richter, Weight, Norstrom, and Tyutin were all 2nd rounders.)

Sure, some guys taken after Falardeau will turn out to be studs. Happens every year... but it's not like the Rangers blew a top five pick or something. Talk to a Phoenix fan in five years if Blake Wheeler turns out to be nothing. THEY'LL have something to complain about.

Kubera, I think all the beef with Farladeu is he was not a pick like well say Darin Olver this year or something where we'd let him develop and see if he works out. Lee was a bad pick from the start and everyone saw it. I think HF even did an article on the pick months ago.

Exactly. This isn't something like "Well, hindsight is 20/20". We all knew the pick wasn't too good at first hand. A 3rd line checking center in the second round? Hopefully we can get him away from MSU, and start developing him in Hartford. Can never have enough 3rd liners!

By the way, I love the Olver pick more and more. He sounds great.

interesting, the 8th round of that draft looks pretty good.
We got Prucha.
4 picks later EDM got Helminen.
10 picks after that TOR got Immonen.

If all three pan out (they all seem like they will as long as the Euros are signed), we'd 3 core players all from the 8th round of a not so deep draft.

As long as we're on the subject of the 2002 draft... (I'm bored and looking at hockeydb)
6 players we picked were either already in or going to college.

Eh, I dunno NYR, I heard plenty of belly-aching when the slightly built Olver (Walt Kyle's 'kid') got picked about a hundred spots higher than his ISS rating.

Sure, Falardeau had his critics from day one, but most of what I read wasn't that he sucked. The criticism I really remember at the time was that he was too 'safe' a pick for most people's taste. Everyone believed he'd make it to the NHL due to his size, skating, work ethic, and defensive prowess. But most felt he would never be more than a 3rd/4th line defensive specialist and had wanted Sather to take a more 'skilled' player. Nowadays we'd be happy to have just that fourth liner . . .

But still, it doesn't answer my core argument with this thread. Most 2nd rounders suck. Falardeau is in some really un-distinguished company in his mediocrity. ESPECIALLY when you consider his draft year. Should Sather have picked someone else? Sure, in hindsight there were several players who would go on to have better careers. But it's not like you can't see what the scouts were interested in. A huge tough kid who can skate, likes to hit and play defense, and has a good work ethic. He didn't do much on offense, but if he did, he would have been picked long before the Rangers went up to the podium. They took a gamble that he'd develop, and unfortunately his offense never arrived. But if it had, he'd have been the steal of the draft.

I still don't see the tragedy . . . you want to complain, talk about Neil Smith whiffing on three top ten picks in two years (Maholtra, Brendl, Lundmark). Now THAT I think is atroicious.
