How does losing key faceoffs make the team better? I'm no huge fan of Stapleton overall, but after the job he did on draws last night, he needs to be kept in the lineup.

We already have Slater to take face offs do we really need two of him?

I wonder if Klingberg will get called up.

As for MacLean, I could see another team with an injury to their top six claiming him. I really wanted him to work out, but he did nothing when he was with Burmi and Antro.

With how much our other guys have struggled on draws? I think we absolutely do. Plus Stapleton isn't all that bad, he's pretty solid defensively.

That's exactly it. Maclean is a top 6 type player and really isn't good enough for the top 6.

Fehr made the trip. Could be for him.

Yeah they're gonna send Jones or Meech down over Maclean. Thats nonsensical.
If this a move to get Hainsey back on the roster, it means they go back to carrying 8 defensemen. You know how many teams regularly carry 8 D. Go on take a guess. It's us STL, and SJS. 3 teams. There is a reason this is not done regularly. Meech has played what 2 games this season?

He was never given an opportunity here or in PHO to show what he can do. Look at a Matt Moulson, he was told again and again how he was too slow, he would never make it, in fact the Kings and Penguins both cut ties with him leaving him as a UFA for nothing since they thought that. What do you know, Islanders give him a real chance to contribute and he scores back to back 30 goal seasons. Again I would not care if they did not put a claim in, but why bother with the claim if you have no intention of giving him an opportunity?

Tim Stapelton
Q COMP -.267
GFON/60 1.29
GAON/60 2.58

Brett Maclean
Q COMP +.069
GFON/60 4.55
GAON/60 3.03

Advanced metrics do agree with you that Stapleton is a slightly better defender his offensive abilities pale in comparison. Playing against worse competition his play translates to 3.26 fewer GF/60 then MacLean's. He has won 57% of his defensive face offs but is that valuable enough to offset what you lose? (Obviously this sample size is to small to draw accurate conclusions but if management is willing to take 5 games as a large enough sample size I will compare as such.)

My guess would be that one member of mangement was really high on him while others may not have been. They took him cause it cost little but the more senior mangement was never enamoured and would only want to keep him around if he really showed something and he didn't in his limited time so away he goes.

Can't believe we actually waived him, I hope he goes to St. John's, I think hes good, just needs to work on stuff. I have a feeling if he plays the whole year in St. John's with Klingberg and all them, the Icecaps win the Calder Cup, their playing well this year too.

Not surprised. He didn't do anything with us, and didn't even look visible in games.

MacLean would be a key cog for St. John's, but there's really no way Phoenix doesn't just re-claim him.

Well, as least the Jets got to see what he was made of for themselves. Didn't think he cut the grade so won't miss 'em.

The Coyotes must see something in him that I don't.

They see that they can send him to the AHL. What they wanted to do with him to begin with.

Incidentally, this whole situation played out the way Maloney hinted it would.

Conspiracy theory: favour for Phoenix. Jet's claimed him with the intention of putting him back on waivers so the Coyotes could send him straight down to the AHL after re-claiming him.

I'll put my tinfoil hat away now.

Fail to see any benefit in that to either team.

Advantage for the Coyotes is the Jets picked up one or two of his paycheques. Now they'll lose less money this year.

Heh, really doubt they care. His AHL salary is 65k.
