This is an ongoing process, it's still new and will adapt to player's behaviours. I agree that Wolski viciously took advantage of Alfredsson skating into him (let's be honest, Alfie definitely initiated contact and wasn't looking where he was going) but there's nothing in the rules that allow Shanahan to do something about it: it isn't Shanahan's failure.
I just think they are taking it too far, and too many games...its hockey players get hurt.

if i wanted to watch this kinda hockey i would watch the SEL or some lame euro league

The Sens get severely bent over on that call given what happened with Konopka and Anisimov earlier in the game.

This is actually very frustrating. I didn't really care about a suspension or not but I expected something after the officials screwed up the call on the ice.
The refs do have the option to give an intent to injure match penalty but they very rarely exercise that call.

I'm sure Neil/Konopka/Smith/Carkner will do something to spice it up a little next time the Rangers are coming to play....

Just mark my words.

Now you're taking it too far. There's still plenty of hitting in the NHL.
It's like when the lockout happened: people were complaining about the very high number of penalties being called and so on, but in the end it evened out.

somewhat related... and I'm going to guess the answer is 'no.' Did Konopka have any follow-up punishment for his hit on Saturday? I can't find much on the interwebs. I remember being pissed at the time, thinking it wasn't dirty.

I appreciate it.

Good. And not to bring this thread off topic too much, but I hope you enjoy Z. My question was purely for fantasy-purposes. However, I think Konopka is a very underrated player. And I always appreciated that, while he leads the league in PIMs, they're almost all fighting-related. He's not a dirty player... but is tough as nails, wins FWs, can kill penalties... etc.

Anyways, best of luck with Alffy.

Shanahan does not have carte blanche.
He is employed by the Owners of the NHL teams, and their stooges at NHL head office.
I'm sure he was told to back off.
I'm sure he is not happy at all about it.
Remember that the ONLY thing that drives the NHL head office is MAKING MONEY.
Players with concussions be damned.
Enforcers committing suicide well just part of the price.
They think that being strick on head rules will hurt their bottom line.
STUPID NHL.

What's "normal" for this kind of thing? (we all know the crazy long-term concussions).

Can't Fisher get in trouble with the league for something like this? Quite surprised such a quiet man would speak out online.

He's just saying he doesn't get it, not that the disciplinary branch of the NHL sucks.

Sticking up for himself and his former teammate. It's just the way the Sens roll.

That being said, it doesn't really seem like he was criticizing the NHL per se. He was just saying he was confused as to how it wasn't a suspension.

Wow, still some people out there buying the koolaid that Alfie lifted and ran in to his elbow. Wow.

Great discussion on this on the Team with Galley and Mike Eastwood - you know guys that actually played! They basically said Wolski went for a cheap fly by shot, and it was worse than he intended. It wasn't a hockey play, just a sneak shot that guys try to get away with. These are pros, and anyone who thinks it was a coincidence that Wolski's arm came up to hit Alfie's head by accident is being niave.

I didn't see a link but here is Kerry Frasers take on the Konopka and Alfredson hits on Saterday, it's a good read.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=379366

Durring the game they showed an overhead shot that Wolski actually moved away from the direction of the play, lifts his arm and hit Alfredsson. This is totaly diffrent then the Neil hit earlier this year, that Neil didn`t get suspended for.

Hate to say it but they got this wrong.

Hope the team is just resting Alfredson and not taking any chances like they did a few games back.

The NHL isn't a communism.

Konopka didn't hit the play in the numbers, it was the players own fault for turning into the glass and then lying on the ice for an extended period of time, when it was quite obvious he was not alright.

Also, the hit on Alfie, when the player stuck his elbow out in the middle of the ice, when the puck wasn't even near the, was eerily similar to the Cormier hit two year ago. The only difference was it was Alfies hip, not his head, and Cormier was suspended for a extremely long time for that one.

I'm quite furious myself. Our captain gets hit by a quasi-NHLer with a vicious elbow, INTENTIONALLY, yet only a two minute penalty is awarded and no suspension follows. Anyone who has two eyes can see on the replay that Wolski went out of his way to hit Alfie, yet Shanahan doesn't even blink an eye. What the hell??? I MAD.
