The Rangers were able to roll 4 lines a lot last year. This year we hardly use the 4th line. Mostly it seems Torts substitutes to other lines off it. I'm kind of thinking we need more of an impact from our 4th line. At least 8-10 minutes a game.
MZA does not fit the profile of a 4th liner. Deveaux does. The Rangers need to get a forecheck and they need to start punishing opponents defenses. Whether Deveaux works out for us or not I don't know but it might just be worth trying.
Considering the guy he's replacing got about 8 minutes combined in the last 2 games, this is really a non-issue. It's another version of Kris Newbury that's going to fill a small role that Newbury couldn't hold onto.
He's replacing a useless, non-NHL caliber grinder who plays ~5 minutes a game with a different, useless, non-NHL caliber grinder who will play ~5 minutes a game. The move is completely null and it just seems like Torts isn't satisfied to only juggle his lines now, but has some kind of pathological obsession with making changes just to make them. What does Newbury for Deveaux do? What purpose? Does anyone feel like having Deveaux over Newbury would have made that Ottawa game a win? It's 100% psychological for Torts, IMO.
watched him on the leafs. Basically has no offensive awareness and isn't that great a skater. He'll fight though. He's good at cycling the puck but does nothing with it. 2008-2009 was a horrible year to watch with guys like Deveaux, sifers in the lineup.
Isnt hard to understand this call up. Rupp has a knee injury and wont play tomorrow, and they need a tough guy in the lineup against teams like the Sharks and Ducks.
I disagree. He will get virtually no ice time and have zero impact on the game. We need to win. Deveaux is really no better a tough guy than Newbury; he's just bigger. He's an awful skater, bad fighter and he's not "tougher" than Newbury (or Prust for that matter) he's just a large body. This move is all Torts' need to make changes.

Newbury was useless, and Deveaux is certainly not a bad fighter. We need a guy like him to take care of business out there, and also winning a fight creates momentum.

Mark my words: Deveaux will be more useless than Newbury. Also, he is still a bad fighter. If your argument is that we need a tough guy in the lineup because of our opponent, than what is Deveaux going to do? Adam Mair is not a fighter. Scott Ford? I was at the game in the pre-season when Deveaux fought Clarkson and I didn't think it was a good fight; Rangers fans just love it because Clarkson is a Devil. A fight like that is hardly going to get your team any momentum and Clarkson is not a heavy compared to the teams we're about to play.
Deveaux is simply not an NHL calibre player at all. He shouldn't be here. Newbury is better. Mitchell is better (oddly, all three are ex-leafs). Weise would have been worlds better. Hagelin would probably help the team more (fine, I understand not wanting to rush him). Deveaux is simply going to be irrelevant in his stint with the Rangers. It's a move for the sake of making a move. I'm not saying Deveaux won't be adequate for the one or two lame fights he might get to participate in, but Newbury would basically have been the exact same quantity and the impact either player would have on the next stretch of games is absolutely zero. Torts just can't ever let things sit, so he makes a change. It will have no effect.
