Scott Howson to be replaced as Jackets GM

There's a rumour floating on the Jackets board that Howson will be replaced by Monday by Craig Button (ugh, digging an even deeper hole).

Would it be a good idea for Tambellini to bring Howson back into the Oilers organization as an assistant GM? I know we already have Olcyzk in that role, but IIRC he is more involved with the financial and cap management of the team. Howson might be a better fit for player personnel and scouting.

Obviously, the Jackets have been horrible but imo it is not all Howson's fault. I think their owner basically gave him the mandate to make the playoffs this year, and it sort of forced his hand to go all-in this summer in what was a lacklustre UFA class.

no way man. Why would you do that? The organization has changed SO much after he left. He might not recognize a thing

Coincidentally, i put good bye howson in the Out of Town thread. Pretty crazy.

Craig Button? Lol, haven't Blue Jacket fans seen enough awful drafting in their teams history?

Lowe enjoyed his best years as GM when he worked with Howson. After he left the team pretty much fell apart. Not saying Howson was the defining factor in all of it, but I think he has an eye for talent which is being overlooked now with the horrible start by the Jackets this year.

Our team sucked when Howson was our assistant GM. The Blue Jackets suck even more and he's the GM.

Whether or not he had much of an impact on the suckage of his teams, what indication has he given that he is a competent GM or AGM?

I see no real need for him. Is he that missed?

Pass.

Yes, this - seriously.

CBJ is clearly one of the worst-run teams in the league.

Why would we want anything to do with that?

Lowe isnt the GM. I know some people like to believe he is, he probably has a say but Tambo is GM. Tambo should be able to choose his own guy.

And if he truly had an eye for talent, the CBJ wouldnt be in a rut.

Huh, I didn't think so many would be against it.

It's not like we'd be trading anything for hiring him. Just adding another hockey brain to the management group.

And as far as I'm aware, the Oilers were much more competitive while Howson was here than they were after he left.

Not really my point - just saying that he obviously contributed to the success of the team while Lowe was the GM. And it would obviously be Tambellini's decision now.

Howson's made some good moves and some bad moves as Jackets' GM. Not saying he would be like hiring Scotty Bowman, but I don't think it would hurt to have another voice in the discussion upstairs.

I live in Columbus. Visited down by the arena tonight... word around town is matching up with this.

Howson has done a number on the snakebitten franchise. Sad.

Unless he trades us their 1st or Johansen before leaving I see zero reason to bring him back.

How many GM's do we need?
One good one would be enough and better than 3 bad ones.

What's so bad about our current one?

3rd place in the conference not good enough for you, Olli?

Why? We need NHL defencemen. Not more General Managers.

I thought it was bad enough that we, Oiler fan's crave old Oiler players, now we need old management too.

Craig Button?

Really?

The guy is still living off his fluke Iginla pick from 2 decades ago, was a terrible GM in Calgary, and is one of the worst prospect TV analysts around... have they learned nothing in Columbus?

Might as well just bring back Doug Maclean.

Why would they hire Button when Mike Milbury is available?

Johansen, Carter, Wisniewski...the guy is hitting home runs, and bad luck and injuries are sewering the team. Too bad for Howson, but he had to gamble. The only way fans were coming back was with a winning team, and he went out and got them.

I'd bring him back, no problem. The guy has an eye for talent.

Probably their biggest hole has been goaltending. Mason has been brutal since winning the calder. He's looking like Raycroft.

They had a chance to take a guy like Emery this summer but went with Dekanich. They signed Wisnewski for way too much money. The Carter trade was a positive move, but it still didn't solve the biggest holes on the team.

Button's record in Calgary was mixed at best. He'd be a really surprising pick to take over.

What an utter disaster it would be for them to hire button.

Re Howson, the only good year lowe had as a gm was the one right after the lockout when howson was around. Lowe was a sheer and utter disaster after that when Howson left so howson has some value as an employee. As it is now though we have no need for another guy in the managment tree.

The dichotomy isn't that clear. Howson left after the first season of suckage, not right after the cup run. So he was AGM for the Smyth for Nilsson, O'Marra, Plante trade, Pronger for Lupul, Smid etc trade, signed the Pisani overpay, and Staios and Moreau contracts.
