(Source: http://espn.go.com/nhl/attendance)

The big hockey markets are doing well as usual. But there are still a few stunners: Three teams have a percentage of seats sold of less than 60% so far, including - to my surprise - Dallas. And what's up with Buffalo? New owner and an improved team lead to just 13k and under 75% (after 18.4k and 98.7% last season), whereas St. Louis (a young team that missed the playoffs) and Tampa (made the ECF but only after long and many years of sucking) could be considered the positive surprises.

Edit:

This is what I get taking the numbers from NHL.com (http://www.nhl.com/ice/gamestats.htm...ewName=summary):

#TeamGP@HAverageNote

(* although it sold more tickets than two of ANA's home games)

Note: I could've made a typo here and there calculating the average numbers. But all in all it should be correct. Capacity numbers taken from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...as_by_capacity).

Glad to see St. Louis and Tampa where they are, really strong fan bases in both cities. I am very surprised at the numbers for Buffalo, I totally thought there would be a major turnout, especially in the beginning of the season.

Awards:
The "What's up" with Buffalo is that they've only included the Helsinki game and three of the four games in Buffalo in their total, yet still divided it by 5. More reasons not to trust ESPN for hockey stats... math fail. They have them at 69,419 after five games, missing a full-house (18,690) from home somewhere in there. They're actually at 88,109 for five games... including 13K in Helsinki as a home date.

Stars is a little bit misleading

They had a few games go head to head with Rangers games did they not?

ESPN's attendance stats have been proven to be full of errors by HF posters.

the teams that played in Europe, like buffalo are going to have their numbers skewed

The Kings for example, have played 3 games at the staples and sold out each 1, yet their % is at 96.7 because they played 2 'home' games in europe

Buffalo has sold out every game according to NHL.com

ESPN's page has been glitched for a while. Wouldn't take some of those numbers as accurate without doublechecking.

also the fact that 5 teams are above 100% attendance, should tell you all you need to know about those numbers

Why is Dallas' attendance so low? They're battling for top spot currently in the West. Even with the uncertainty about ownership (that's still an ongoing issue, isn't it?), the fact they're winning usually would resolve any apathy the fans might have for the team.

Also a bit surprising to see Buffalo so low. Rich owner willing to spend, and a team that looks better on paper than it has in years. Yet they're not drawing very well.

Edit: Should have read further into the thread past the OP. Apparently ESPN is bad with its accuracy?

The Devils are in the 14,000's. But by January, you'll see crowds consistently at 15,500ish.

I head a lot of crap from islander fans all summer long about how great their team is and how they are going to challenge for the division this year. Seems a lot of them didn't put their money where their mouth is and decided to still not show up for games.

..that some arenas area allowed to sell 'standing room only' tickets or add extra seating that are not official full-time seats in their buildings???

I wouldnt put too much stock in Tampa's numbers. They tend to have people with double vision counting.

Also, for example, the rangers have only had 2 home games so far due to the construction going on at MSG.

Wasn't there a thread about this yesterday? I'll try to find it.

There were a bunch of mistakes with them using NBA stadium configurations for capacity estimates, inconsistent counting of standing room sales, and updating the games played without also updating overall attendance (thus averages were messed).

Several home games have gone head to head with Rangers ALCS or World Series games. That and the fact that we dont quite yet have our new owner(something that should be finally resolved the end of November) have really contributed to the poor attendance.

What sort of evidence do you have to suggest theat the people you talked to aren't going to the games?

I can't believe that you talked with more than 10,000 different Islander fans specifically about this one thing.

What's irritating is that there aren't more sites that track attendance.
