Forwards:

E. Kane- Crosby- Giroux
Tavares - RNH- Stamkos
Nash- Toews- Perry
Couture- M.Richards- Seguin

St.Louis/Iginla (one or both make the team if they are still playing & at relatively high level)

Getzlaf, E.Staal, Carter, J.Staal, Duschene, Hall, Eberle, Bergeron, Marchand, Lucic, Sharp, Thornton, Marleau, Neal, Skinner all probably get serious looks...

plus 3-4 more who will come out of nowhere in the next 2 years.

Defense

Doughty- S. Weber
Keith- Piertangelo
Phaneuf- Letang
Staal

Green, Jay Bouwmeester, Seabrook, Burns & Hamhuis are some veterans that will all get strong consideration (perhaps even B.Campbell if he carries his play for 2 more years)

Myers, Alzner, Subban, Fowler, Schenn all could force their way into the discussion if they progress well the next 2 years.

Goalies

Price
Ward
Fleury

barring injury, I'd bet a large sum Price wins this goalie competition. Any of the three make a solid case, but in my (highly biased) opinion, Price is both the most talented and most competitive of the three.

don't think any other goalies will challenge those 3 for Team Canada spots, but I suppose:
Luongo, Crawford, Reimer, Elliot and perhaps J.Bernier would be the group of guys most likely to pose a threat to challenge for a spot by 2014.

One thing I will say is that no line will have 3 NHL centers on it. Guys like Giroux, Tavares, Bergeron, maybe Stamkos could be moved to the wing.

The Staals, and Getzlaf cannot play the wing. None of them are particularly great skaters, and moving big centers to the wing often leads to mobility issues

When is someone going to start the "Assuming Crosby will NOT be playing in Sochi, who will be on the Canadian Team" thread?

I am watching Skinner dominate the Oilers. On the big ice he would be a HUGE asset.

I agree it's not ideal, but Getzlaf for example played RW for 2 World Juniors with Jeff Carter as center. Staal I remember last year was moved to his off wing for a time with Carolina.

It's just so tough with so many elite centers, and tough to leave players off.

Not bad at all but that 3rd line Defensive pairing would be our undoing.

I do think that Eric Staal could adapt to wing, but as of now his play hasnt warranted consideration, and we have some really dynamic wingers developing (Benn, Hall, currently Seguin)

Jordan Staal definitely isnt a good enough skater to play wing, and neither is Getzlaf. The problem with big centers is that it does take some time to adapt to the different positioning, as these guys cant easily make up for positioning issues with their speed.

Reason why Tavares can play wing is that hes simply smarter with the puck than those guys, and on big ice he makes it so hard to contain him

Another center who I could see moving to wing is RNH. Unless he gets drastically better at faceoffs, he has no shot at a center position as he wont beat out Crosby, Toews, Stammer, for a top 6 role.

That being said players change, so I could look like an idiot in 2 years

Replace Brown with...Shane Doan even though he'd be 38. He still brings an all around game and is a leader.

I think Getzlaf will have declined by then

I think your 4 centers will be Crosby, Toews, RNH, and Stamkos.

Staal-Getzlaf-Perry was a line. Staal looked great there in 2010

Yandle is American, and Lecavalier? Really? There's a lot better options on the wing (Benn, Hall, Sharp, etc.), let alone at centre, to have play him out of position.

If Cam Ward is our starting goaltender I really don't like our chances. I would take Luongo, Price, or Fleury over him any day. Hell I would even prefer Jose Theodore to Cam Ward at this point...

Eberle - RNH - Hall
Seguin

Doughty - Weber (A)
Keith (A) - Seabrook

Letang? Murphy?

Luongo

It's harsh to a bunch of forwards, but it is really hard to fit in all the guys upfront.
