IIHF World ChampionshipDiscuss International Tournaments like the WJC, Olympics, and World Cup, as they take place, or discuss past tournaments. performances.
so this is the thread where everyone says their best american born prospect should make the team...with that said its an absoulte atrocity against mankind that nobody mentioned derek stepan ryan mcdonagh or chris kreider
only at HF
Erik Johnson, Whitney, Goligoski, Fowler, Bogosian, and Carlson would all be on the outside looking in unless they explode, or become more consistent, over the next two years which is entirely possible obviously.
big fan of Shattenkirk in 2014 imo think he his worthy of consideration but Yandle, and Johnson are more seasoned puck moving deference men that would get the nod anytime over shatty
Based on Rabid Rangers original post and MY picks for Team Canada...
Steven Stamkos - Sidney Crosby (C) - Patrice Bergeron
Claude Giroux (A) - Ryan Getzlaf - Corey Perry
Jeff Skinner - Taylor Hall - Matt Duchene
Mike Richards - Jonathon Toews (A) - Rick Nash
Tyler Seguin
Shea Weber (A) - Kris Letang
Duncan Keith - Drew Doughty
Brent Burns - Tyler Myers
Alex Pietrangelo
I think 2 of Team USA`s goalies make Team Canada - Miller and Quick (I am assuming Thomas will be retired by 2014). Canada sends Fluery.
Of Rabid Ranger`s remaining picks, the ones I think make Team Canada are in Red.
Zach Parise (for Hall)-Paul Stastny-Bobby Ryan
Ryan Kesler-Patrick Kane (for Duchene)-Phil Kessel
Drew Stafford-Joe Pavelski-Jason Pominville
Dustin Brown-David Backes-Ryan Callahan
JVR
Ryan Suter/Keith Yandle
Erik Johnson/Jack Johnson
Brooks Orpik/Cam Fowler
John Carlson
Hall might then replace Seguin as the 13th forward depending on who is hotter - I think Hall`s 2 way play is better for Sochi and the Big Ice. Then again, by 2014, perhaps RNH is better than BOTH of them.
Tim Gleason was their best defender and I don't see anyone mentioning him in this thread. Whitney and Martin are both superior defenders at the moment, so I'm sorry but you are wrong.
Unless, like I said, Erik Johnson finds some consistency to his game.
Did you just say Gleason was a better defender than the nominated best defender of the Olympics in Rafalski?
EJ will find himself on the team within 2 years no problem. He's no worse than Martin/Whitney/Orpik who are having their names thrown around in the defensive end and he provides a strong 2-way game with a bit of a physical edge to it. Dude has literally been a rock for the Avs this season and his only knock thus far has been his decision making for when to lead the rush versus passing the puck up ice.
I am a bit surprised to not hear Liles name mentioned as a possible veteran QB for the 6th/7th spot though, if Martin is being considered then in 2 years Liles may also be worth a long look for some leadership and blue line production depending how his next couple years shake out.
EJ has an advantage over others (like Goligoski) because he was already on the team, and he played well IMO. JJ should be there because of his time commitments to USA hockey, in addition to him being a great player.
I didnt think Gleason was good. Same for Whitney. Suter and Rafalski were by far our best d-men in the tourney. That shouldn't even be up for debate.

Reason: left out a word
People are really not giving Russia any credit. At home, on the Big Ice. Like so many have said...
Canada vs Russia for the Gold.
Sweden vs Finland for the Bronze.
USA falls flat on the Big Ice - in my, know nothing, opinion.
Canada doesn't have a great record on the big ice either, and IMO they will be even more inclined than the U.S. to stick to their guns roster wise instead of adapting a bit.
Maybe as a 13th forward, but I don't see MacPac making it this time. But things can change, so who knows.
I think either Brown, J Johnson, or Parise will be the American captain. (Johnson would be a great choice IMO given how much he bleeds red, white, and blue--even if his Kings captain is on the team). I give an outside shot to Kesler for the captaincy.

I think it would be hard to give it to JJ with his horrible +/-. You want a Captain who bleeds (red, white and blue) on both ends of the ice.
