Dreger is pretty much a member of the Leafs organization. Anytime Burke and Nonis want something leaked they do it through Dreger since he's the cousin of Dave Nonis.

This is basically Burke telling the league he would like to add a top 6 forward and is ready to deal.

Thanks, tips. It's a good thing we already have 4 then: Kessel, Lupul, Kulemin, Macarthur.

Does he really need the media to tell the league he's shopping for a forward?

Insert "Leafs want team X's second best player for their 3rd liner and a 5th round pick" here

Burke uses the media more than any GM I've ever seen. Everyone always knows where he stands because it's always put out there. It's a skill that he has and I think it does help him. Having Nonis and Dreger being related sure does help to. Dreger is a master of spin and a total shill for the NHL head offices and the Leafs.

I know Columbus has stopped talking with him since the attempted Antropov deal. Burke wanted more for Antropov than Howson eventually gave up to Ottawa for Vermette.
Vermette - 46th overall pick, Pascal Leclaire
Antropov - 50th overall pick, Conditional 4th round pick in 2009

What was Burke's asking price from Columbus? It looks like he settled for a similar package.

Dreger: Maple Leafs want better players.

This whole Nonis being related thing is new to me. Burke is such a Jedi.

Yeah I agree with that, though just saying we're looking for a top 6 forward seems like something GMs shouldn't really need to hear from the media.

No Gunnarsson has been solid.

Aulie, Liles, Franson are more in play I'd hope (although I want to keep Liles, unlike most Leaf fans).

No way, the 2nd would be going the other way. Gunnarson is soo underrated and Brassard is soo overrated

Your overall point may not be wrong, but Dreger and Nonis didn't even realize they were cousins until they were both working in hockey, and Dreger has denied that Nonis is one of his sources multiple times. That being said, yes, Darren Dreger and Damien Cox are two of Burke's favorite mouth-pieces.

If Burke let's it be known around the league that he's interested in dealing, he's in a position of weakness because the other GMs know he's looking for a player. If he leaks it through the media he can pretend to be listening to offers rather than proposing them. This helps maximize his return.

Or at least that's my guess as to why Burke works through the media rather in the backroom.

Gunnarsson isn't going anywhere unless it is for a top forward (package obviouslly).

I never knew Nonis was related to Dreger ??? Wtf

Can we upgrade our defense instead? It freaking sucks. Or an upgrade at goalie position.

If not either of those, #1 center is what the Leafs need. Connolly is a top 6 forward but a #1 center with Kessel would be magical. One thing worth pointing out, a situation like that would bump Connolly down to the 3rd line which would one heck of an improvement but then you have a guy with a cap hit of almost 5M playing on the 3rd line.

Yeah that's a really good point.

Well with the way his recent deals have gone, I won't be complaining about his methods.
