Big Contracts After Career Year/Performance

Who are some of players that received big contracts after career years/great playoff performances, but didn't live up to them?

Please don't mention any from this offseason, as it is too early to tell whether or not the signings are busts.

Some could argue Danny Briere. His regular season performances certainly haven't come close to reaching the 95 point season he had before signing the big contract with the Flyers.

He brings it up in the playoffs so I don't think Philly fans care.

I know you mention not this past offseason, but Leino is likely to be an exact case of this. One full season in the NHL and 53 points gave him $4.5M/year long term.

Ballard makes 4.5 million...

And I know it is WAY too early to say anything for certain, but I can't help but to feel that signing Pekka Rinne for $7 million will be an issue in the future. Same with Brygalov.

Jose Theodore is pretty much the NHL poster-boy for "contract-year player".

Twice, he has conned teams into giving him a big contract after a dominating/excellent season and/or playoffs, and both times he proceeded to stink it up immediately afterwards.

2002 and 2008 earned him HUGE money.

Theodore my ass. Tim Connolly runs away with this. Hell he doesn't even earn the huge contracts he stinks up afterwards.

Indeed, he was...He used to play HUGE minutes, and was a very good player at both ends of the ice.

He was a legit 10-goal/40-point defenseman for awhile, and could shut-down opposing forwards too. He has a plus-23 rating playing on the Panthers!

From 2006-2009, he was a top 10-15 defenseman in the NHL. Things fell apart once he went to Calgary though.

He had basically 3 identical years immediately prior to his contract year, how does he fit this thread at all?

His career year was 2 years ago, he's been fine in his few games back and the OP specifically requested not to use guys who were signed this offseason.

What? When has he even got a very large contract other than with Toronto, in which he is at a PPG..

Recent memory would be Ville Leino over on Buffalo.. signed for as much as Connolly to FILL Connolly's spot yet Connolly has twice as many points in half the games lol.

Is Khabibulin's contract up this year? The last two times his contract ran up he was coming off a Stanley Cup win and posted by far his best numbers for the Blackhawks (helps the team got good!) then signed with a bottom feeder.

I checked. He's signed for another year after that. So I guess I'll give him credit for genuine great play and not motivation for more $$$.
