How to prepare for a crosscheck in the back?

It's not something we plan for, but with recent crashing to the nets and screens etc I been noticing I usually end up face first on the ice after battling down low above the crease.

Is there anyway you forwards out there prepare for cross checks/ pushing while being downlow by the goalie?

It's a battle in front of the net, and you have to always expect it. You know they are going to try to engage you so be prepared. Be strong on your feet and on your stick and win the positional battle. Get low and own the space. The more you play the better you get a feel for and are better able to maintain your balance through contact. Or just pray for some help from the refs.

when positioning yourself in front of the net, widen your stance to make a triangle/tripod with your feet to make an upside down V and lean forward a bit on your stick and you should be able to absorb most of that crosscheck when it does come. Unless its a Pronger-like penalty worthy crosscheck.

Or watch Tomas Holmstrom from the Red Wings in a game

From 5 seconds on in this clip too, #96 - they even slow it down later in the video too, you can see him setting up in front of the opposing defenseman:

Just keep your knees bent, stay low, and use your stick as a 3rd leg.

also remember the #1 rule, if you get hit and start to lose your balance always fall directly on the goalie.


this is awesoem because either the dman gets a penalty 4/10, 5/10 times the goalie gets pissed off at his defenceman and he doesnt want to do it again and 1/10 times you get an interference penalty

That is a good one. Had a game where I got pushed twice and fell on the goalie "accidentally" both times; drew a penalty once and the other time we scored while he was knocked over.
