The MDZ thread.

I'm sick of this guy becoming a whipping boy for this season.

The kid has 4 points in 9 games this season, which is not bad (in 81 games, that's 36 points, which leads our defense last year, though obviously you can't use prorating 9 games into the season) with an offense that's struggling and has been playing steady defense except for maybe 1-2 noticeable gaffes, at the age of 21 years old.

The kid is good and it's disgusting that he's getting so much hate around here. Last season was absolutely justified, but as of so far this year he's been very, very solid.

Agree for the most part. However his shooting accuracy still needs major work.

There are few perfect players. I think he is doing better than last season. He gives us an added dimension that we need.

I think he's played very well thus far, and has been putting up points the past few games. I think that goal raised his confidence a bit, he played a very solid offensive game today. Jumped into the play consistently and intelligently, created space on the powerplay, made strong outlet passes, and got an assist.

On top of that, his defensive game has improved by leaps and bounds. He still has the occasional erroneous turnover, and his footspeed is below par, but he's usually in position and is good behind the net, IMO.

Hopefully he keeps it up.

Leave this kid alone.

I think this fan base has been spoiled with some of the other younger defenseman stepping in and looking like vets.
Unless they're top 5 picks, most young d-man take time to develop.

He's had a decent start to the season but I thought I read he practiced shooting this summer. Couldn't hit a barn door - his accuracy is still wooful

I am very glad we have him. Thinking we have Sauer, Del Zotto, Erixon, McDonagh and Staal for the years to come is comforting.

I love this kid. He's playing extremely solid this season. You can tell he's getting more and more confidence every game.

Could've had John Carlson, instead. Thanks, Gordie! And thanks for Sanguinetti over Giroux and McIlrath over Fowler!

MDZ has looked minimally better. Nothing to write home about, but not surely bad enough to be a whipping boy. As someone stated before he needs to hit the net more.

Some of you guys are ridiculous.

MDZ has easily been our #3 defenseman. You can tell he has other focuses besides his offensive game, which says a tremendous bit about his character.

1. His transition game has been phenomenal. Arguably our best defenseman thus far in terms of getting the puck from defense to offense.

2. He's been very steady defensively. Not dominant, but he's been physical and his stick work very impressive. He hasn't been over-committing like the past, he's been poised and waiting for the play to come to him.

3. Very few stretch passes!

The new NHL has ushered in a defenseman that can make a living off his transition game. I think MDZ has realized being a PPQB isn't gonna cut it, and he is trying to round his game out. I could care less if losing a little offense is the result of Del Zotto become a great 2nd pairing defenseman in all situations.

The team's been awful this season, and he is one of the very few bright spots.

Unfortunately practicing shooting is a lot different than doing it in a live game situation where there are bodies all in front of you. I'm sure any NHL player can take slap shots and hit the net just about every time in a non game situation.

I agree MDZ has played fine thus far and i find it irritating when people constantly call for his head because they think he isn't preforming. snyrangersblog.com is a site where all they do is rag on mdz i think he will end up being a pleasant surprise at the end of the season

Going from being an absolute disaster in his own end and being lousy on offense to logging solid minutes on the second pairing while producing decent points and playing well on the PP only constitutes "minimal" improvement?

MDZ has been a pleasant surprise this year.

What hasn't been mentioned much is the fact that he was paired up with a rookie in Erixon and acquitted himself very well. For him to step in and be a steady defensive presence on that pairing is impressive considering he's an offensive defenseman. I thought Erixon looked a lot better paired with MDZ than Eminger, and I think part of it has to do with how MDZ has been playing as of late.

Whoever here has a problem with MDZ's game is a fool that should stop watching hockey. Every single dmen in the league is bound to make mistakes. Del Zotto hasn't played mistake-free hockey, but that doesn't mean he hasn't made significant strides in improving his overall game.

Very happy with the way he's played thus far. Keep it up, kiddo!

I usually don't touch defenseman threads cause I always manage to turn it into a Fowler/McIlrath pissfest

But I came to admit that Del Zotto, this bum I can't stand, my very own whipping boy, has been solid offensively and has been threefold better defensively. Good for him. If he continues this play I could see him developing into a serviceable top 4. He's certainly surprised me and I admit I was hasty with him.

MDZ's D has been adequate this season. Good for him. His offensive flair is still lacking so that part has been a bit of a disappointment. Overall he's exceeded my expectations so I won't put any failure of the Rangers overall game on his shoulders.

To start a bit of controversy, MDZ has now elevated his game to Gilroy's level.

His skill is moving back to the forefront. From what I see, he has been working mentally on his game. One thing is a lot less blind passes that should never have been made.
Defensively he is getting better and being more careful. If he can find that groove we might get to see more of that skill directed in future to his efforts on the attack, but one thing at a time is okay with me. This is really good to see.

Yep same Gilroy.

MDZ's level is now up to a 3rd pairing D. It's better than last year but a top 4 D on how many teams?

After sending Erixson down and Staal still missing, Emm's -7 is becomming the next issue.

Forgetting the offense for the moment, The D currently has too many holes.

Gilroy was never ever better than Del Zotto.

Ever.
