^Whoa.

But yeah, they'd need to re-change the title in like 2 days.

Well, I'm hoping Van will be there come that time, so no dice

Really though, I hope you guys make the playoffs this year. Hopefully by eliminating Edmonton on the last day of the season

I dunno. I don't think missing the playoffs for the sixth time in a row would piss Edmonton fans off quite as much as finally making the playoffs and being seeded against Minnesota in the first round.

So, the Wild are still first after tonight.

Not sure about that tomorrow night though.

EDIT: But the Wild will still be first in their division!

If Pittsburgh and Philadelphia win tonight, they'll still only be tied with us, right? We'll still have a game in hand vs Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia will have the same record as us. Doesn't this keep us tied for first?

Philly has the next tiebreaker (ROW) at 12-9 if they win in regulation/overtime and at 11-9 if they win in shootout tonight. Pittsburgh can't even pass Chicago tonight. However, if San Jose ever gets around to playing another game, they have 2 games in hand in regards to us (but are 2 points back).

Indeed.

It would be nice to go to a game with a truly packed house and a (hopefully) loud crowd again...

This team isn't going to stay at the top for long and that's perfectly acceptable in my view. This year is about developing a new culture and building towards bigger and better things. If this team can find a way into the playoffs, all the better as it will breed some confidence within the team and even some real competition for the kids coming up. Not to mention gain some respectability to hopefully lure both interest league-wide and potentially higher profile free agents.

Getting to playoffs is the goal for this season, and I really really hope it will happen. It would increase the likelihood of getting some impressive FA's next offseason.

Also, getting to second round or even further in playoffs would be epic.

A deep run in the playoffs with an impressive regular season record and cap space to spare, you're right that it would make us attractive to free agents.

Oh this is where the thread went. Didn't see what happened after the title change.

Food for thought: with Crosby back the Pens look like the favorites out East. Considering the standings, who do you think gets in the playoffs by year's end?

In the West, the only team I can really see jumping up into the playoffs (who is out of it as of today) is Vancouver. One of Dallas or Phoenix will drop out.

In the East, I think NJ goes on a surge after Christmas and knocks one of Toronto, Buffalo or Florida out.

Other than that I don't see a lot of movement in and out of the playoffs at this point.

I have similar feelings as the good doctor before me:

In the West, I just can't believe that Phoenix can keep this going. Tippett has been amazing for a few years now, but I still refuse to believe that roster can make the playoffs. I have a harder time writing Dallas off. With their ownership issue more or less resolved at this point, I'd expect moves to be made to improve the team (even if it isn't the offseason anymore).

I think that Edmonton (barring major injuries to top 6 forwards) and St. Louis actually have a shot at the playoffs as well. The bottom 4 teams won't be making it though.

In the East, I see a lot of movement within the top 8, but only one falling out. The Rangers will not make the playoffs. One of NJD, MTL, or TBL will take their place.

West First Round Matchups
San Jose (1) v St. Louis (8)
Minnesota (2) v Dallas (7)
Chicago (3) v Detroit (6)
Nashville (4) v Phoenix (5)

East First Round Matchups
Rangers (1) v Toronto (8)
Pittsburgh (2) v Buffalo (7)
Boston (3) v Washington (6)
Florida (4) v Philadelphia (5)
