What would your team look like if you made better draft choices

just wondering how good your team would be if you had made better draft choices

ok lets try this you can only take players that were drafted 10 or less picks away from the original pick

What's your criteria for "better draft choices"?

You mean go in the past with the knowledge we know and draft the BPA?

Don't know. Maybe a player is good now because they developed in that system and wouldn't work with my teams system.

I believe my scout's do their job and we pick the BPA.

Every team would have Zetterberg on it.

Well, obviously.

Be more specific - because with unbounded assumptions, every team will look exactly the same (for the most part) - all will have Zetterberg, for instance. Is that what you want? If it is, it'd be easier to start a "who are the late round steals?" thread.

I'm guessing he means this:

The Bruins traded DOWN in the 2003 draft... They traded the #16 overall pick for the #21 overall plus a couple late-rounders.

They picked Mark Stuart with that shiny new #21 pick.

Infortunately - had they kept their #16 and used that instead... They coulda picked Zach Parise who went #17.

The big question is: would you be willing to trade Stuart, Masi Marjamaki, and Byron Bitz (the loot from the later-round picks thrown into the trade) for Parise?

I probably would...

the atlanta thrashers would probably still exist

if they didn't trade down/made/dumb picks/let players go for peanuts, their team would look like:
E. Kane-Savard-Hossa
Setoguchi*-Little-Stafford**
Ladd-Burmistrov-someone
Thorburn-Slater-Boulton

Enstrom-Phaneuf***
Byfuglien-Bogosian
herp-derp

Lehtonen
Pavelec

* (traded down from #8 to select Alex Bourret)
** (selected Boris Valabik at 10 instead of Stafford who was taken at 14)
*** (selected at #9. ATL drafted Braydon Coburn at #8 only to trade him)

could you imagine?

The one thing that haunts us the most from the Muckler era was the ridiculous decision to take Lee when both Kopitar (choice 1) and M.Staal (2) were still sitting there.

Muckler never was very good at drafting, but this is one that could have either pushed the Sens to a Cup in 07, or set them up for a long, long time.

Too bad (if you're a Sens fan obviously).

Man, imagine if the Canucks had drafted Grabner in 2006!

Seriously though, we picked Patrick White just before the Blues picked Perron in 2007, yuck. CoHo is thankfully starting to show his prowess so I won't be too sad about Myers being drafted 2 spots after him.

And way back in 2002, we chose Koltsov a few spots ahead of Keith, Hudler, Boychuk and Fleischmann...

The Thrashers could have had a Sedin, as well as anyone not named Alex Bourret or Boris Valabik.

The Oilers screwed up royally in the 03 draft. They traded down as well with their 17th overall (Zach Parise) and then took Crosby's linemate Pouliot who cleary had inflated stats from playing with Sid over a bunch of other future stars. At least the Bruins came out with Patrice. Oilers just missed the boat completely.

Just by switching two picks, Eric Staal would be a Panther, and Rick Nash would be his winger.

In fairness to Pouliot, he had huge stats the year before Crosby got there too. It wasn't a one year thing because of Sid. He did end up being a lazy a$$ who wanted everything handed to him though.

Amazing how this has to be corrected every time it comes up:

Pouliot didn't play with Crosby until AFTER he was drafted.

Not that it wasn't a crappy pick.

The Sharks traded up to take Steve Bernier. Parise was drafted the pick after.

They also traded up to take Setoguchi. Three picks later, Kopitar was selected.

Imagine a forward roster of:

Marleau/Thornton/Pavelski
Parise/Kopitar/Clowe
Couture

Not quite. Hossa wouldn't be there because Heatley wouldn't have been drafted in the first place.

Assuming that we start unraveling things with the Islanders in 2000, they would have drafted Heatley first overall. Atlanta then would have taken Rostislav Klesla 2nd, Minnesota taken Rick Dipietro 3rd, and Marian Gaborik 4th to Columbus.

The Islanders, of course, would have kept Luongo and Jokinen (who was about to break out). Assuming the standings remained the same the next year, which is admittedly doubtful, they would have had Spezza while keeping Chara and avoiding the Yashin headache.

Obviously I'm not really playing along with the premise of the thread, but the divergence in history because of Mad Mike Milbury is certainly an interesting one to think about, particularly since the cascading effects of the 2000 draft are almost never analyzed. Imagine first-year Columbus with Gaborik, possibly being paired up with Tuomo Ruutu (2001) and Rick Nash (2002).

If I made better draft choices the Stars would probably still look the same. I don't remember the last time Stars management called me for draft advice.

We could have Ryan Suter instead of Marty Havlat. Let me explain.

Sharks draft Milan Michalek 6th overall in 2003, Suter is drafted 7th by Nashville. Suter had a direct line to the team since Gary Suter played for SJ.

Michalek traded to Ottawa for Heatley.
Heatley traded for Havlat.

SJ forced to trade a top-6 forward (and top prospect) to help fix the defense with Brent Burns - who was drafted 20th overall in ... 2003!
