The Olé chant that Montreal uses, drives me crazy. Especially when they do it and they aren't even winning a game (they chanted it in the last game that they played against Toronto when they tied the game).
what I want to know is why cant we as hockey fans come up with something beyond the standard "go team go" chant.
I know it is soccer culture with much history etc but I would LOVE, LOVE to see hockey teams adopt those soccer songs that the fans sing in the stadiums but done with their own originality of course for the respective hockey team.
the majority of Boston Bruins (key word here is Bruins, I can't speak for other fan bases because generally they are NOT one in the same) are very knowledgeable hockey fans and absolutely know that the only American hockey player for the Bruins is Tim Thomas. The reason they chant USA is a fan versus fan thing. It has nothing to do with the team make up itself, it has everything to do with the fan bases. It started with habs fans booing the US anthem and kinda spiraled out from there. So now, anytime Boston plays a Canadian team that has it's fair share of arrogant/snotty/annoying fans, Bruins fans will chant USA to a)get under the skin/get back at mostly habs fans, and it trickled over to Nucks fans for many of the same reasons and B) because the city of Boston has a lot of American pride.
The Bruins were the first American team, so regardless of the nationalities of specific members on the Bruins, they represent one one of the oldest cities in the US and the oldest American NHL team.
So really, when you hear it, don't take it as an insult, look at it as a pride thing for Bostonians. You can be prideful of your own country without it automatically meaning you hate or are crapping on every other country in the world, fyi. I think for the most part, it's just the cool thing to hate on the US (much of it justified for sure) that it's considered "backwards" to be patriotic at all. People need to separate the two.
/rant...even though I wasnt angry writing it
I hate the Ole chant, it's a good chant, because it does its job well (pissing off the opposing fan base and players...to an extent anyways) Everytime Boston is losing to Montreal and I hear that chant, I want to break my tv
Then again, when the Bruins are beating Montreal, it's hilarious to hear
Think the LUUUUU chant is dumb, but mostly because nuck fans have a habit of doing it on every save the guy makes.
Thank you Kessel is great because it bothers Phil (who's got some social anxiety disorders which i feel bad about but hey, it's a cruel world out there) and it pisses off Leafs fans to no end, which tbh isn't the be all for me because I do like a lot of leafs fans...but there are so many that the idiots they do have are bound to be in greater abundance.
