Never made another league thread for this year so here it is!
Pekka Rinne re-signed for 7 years with a 7m/yr cap hit. I like that Nashville is spending their money, but spending this much on goaltending hasn't really worked out for many teams. I guess that means Weber or Suter is gone.
Considering Kronwall (thankfully) didn't sign for too much and the Preds will lose either guy or both depending on the market after paying Rinne...I think it opens the door for the Wings to poach one of them to replace Lidstrom.
How much capspace could wings end up having... they already got like 6M, lidstrom retiring is another 6M, cap could rise 2-3M, plus bertuzzi and holmstrom gone, that's like 4M...
It could also do the opposite, I guess. I mean, if they say ''We opened our wallet for Rinne, so we'll open it for you guys, too'' , it might be persuasive enough for them to sign.

Or it could work out negatively, with both of them wanting even more money since Rinne got so much

i agree that it's nice to see nashville spending money. it's about time. but i also agree that it's probably too much for a goalie. looking at the past year, the goalies who the cup were not really elite at the time they won. the position of the goalie is still important, but not as important as it was in the capless days.
i'm not sure though if that means suter and weber are gone. they preds finally showed that they are willing to spend money on an elite player to keep him, so that might be a good sign for the other players to stay. maybe it is possible to contend in nashville, although they have a lot of other work to do first.

How the Hell?
How can they be so damn miserly to Weber and then this?
This just doesn't make much sense.
The Rinne deal is far too high, and if it causes them to lose one of their D, they will have deserved it. There's always a decent goalie or two available for a reasonable amount over the summer, and they're not expensive to trade for, either. This is the position teams like Nashville should look to save a few bucks on while fleecing someone in a trade who thinks a goalie is a cure-all.

wasnt it because Weber didn't want to sign long term though that is why it went to arbitration? I thought Weber was really against signing a long-term deal there so it went to arbitration since they also couldnt agree on terms for a 1 year deal
or is it the other way around and Weber wanted long term and Nashville didn't want to so they took him to arb?

Except if Nashville tried to do that they'd start running into problems with the real salary cap instead of their internal one. They don't have any money coming off their cap next year (other than Weber), and they just added 3.6 mil to Rinne's number. 5.5 plus for Suter, 7.5 plus for Weber, and Nashville would be at 43 mil with 8 or 9 guys to sign.
Unfortunately, here's what is going to happen to Nashville. They have Rinne locked up long term. They will sign Weber to a lifetime deal with a reduced cap hit (6's), and they will sign Suter to a 5 year deal at 5's.
They will then be cryogenically frozen as the same kind of club they always are. Good enough to make the playoffs, never good enough to win more than a round... because once they get done dropping around 20 mil of salary on three guys, they'll be limited to 2's and 3's for the rest of their roster.
Someone on twitter(I think it was LeBrun) said Suter is looking for close to double what he is making right now. So it seems he wants/will get a deal in ~7m from someone.
Yeah if Rinne gets $7mm/year then what on earth are Weber and Suter going to want? I have a hard time seeing either of them accept less money than Rinne.
No. Stuart might get 4.5m on a two year deal, but if he wants to sign a deal where he's close to finishing his career here it'll be for less than 4.5m.
This is very good news if the Wings want to keep Stuart, as it reduces his potential price. Very bad news if they didn't, as Coburn was the best available replacement in a similar role.
I'll say it again; now is the time to trade Stuart for Meszaros.

Why would Philly do that? This makes sense for the Wings, as you get younger and get a guy under contract, but why would the Flyers take the risk and take the older player?
Meszaros has this year, plus 2 more years at $4 million. That's about what it would take to retain Stuart anyway. So what else are we giving up?
I moved all of the Coburn and Rinne talk into here. I figure we'll probably be making threads for any decent RFA who re-signs/traded/etc., so we might as well have them in one place.
