I don't have faith in Dan Harmon anymore. He's feminized Community beyond the point of no return. It doesn't go for funny first, it goes for... something else.
Community is a tremendous, deep, show - it absolutely surpasses the traditional sitcom format and I love it for it.
It's just not going for laughs anymore though, **** it, if it keeps going that way I'm glad it's getting cancelled.
The new ep disappointed me a lot. When the show goes over the top like that, it usually keeps everyone in character and everything believable. But this ep did none of that, which is a shame because it had potential, and they needed a quality episode after this week's news.
I really would like to see more 80s Greendale though, full of parallel characters. Now that could be funny and 'meta'

As for Community as a whole, you can tell the show is different from when it first began. At first, it was a comedy show that was more "real", and now it's getting to be more and more zany antics.

Really? A show that had zombies a couple years ago is more zany now and less real than it used to be? It's always been zany, meta, wacky, and lovable. Has this been the best season? No. But the show hasn't changed all that much. However, it's harder to be "fresh" as time passes, and I think that's what people are confusing with "getting worse." It still is what it is...the most unique comedy on television. Because of that, it's going to be a bit hit and miss. I'd call last night a solid double...maybe even a triple if the runner's fast.

There were plenty of zany things from all 3 seasons. What I mean though is the amount of zaniness seems to be escalating in order to stay "fresh" as you say.
I would like to see some Professors return. Kane, Cligoris, Duncan. I would like a reminder that they're at a college, and, at least with Jeff, trying to graduate.

I hate hate hate this argument whenever it gets tossed around (for other shows too). The show's quality/consistency has dipped, fresh or not. It's still occasionally as great as it ever was, but let's not make excuses. The last thing the show needs to improve is how "fresh it is".
I would accuse a show like Modern Family of being as good as it ever was but less fresh as times goes on, not this. Community's still constantly coming up with fresh, unique, original ideas, it's just not executing half of the time.

I agree but I disagree about the Community and Modern Family comparison.
Community's execution, even as their ideas are more daring and difficult to pull off, is still far better than Modern Family's at this point in time. Any character on that show not named Phil and Luke are shadows of what they once were, and some of them are outright insufferable at this point (Cam and Mitchell in particular). Community is consistently good every week (I've never watched an episode I don't like) but Modern Family is barely worth watching anymore. It's not a bad show, but it's been consistently mediocre (I abandoned the show about 6 episodes in this season; I will return to watch the other episodes at a later date but while I'm working at school, it's not worth my time).

Really? I actually think Modern Family is exactly the same show now compared to before, but it's the same thing being done over and over again every episode... I've just gotten a bit sick of it to be honest.
Still, I'd take an average MF episode over a bad Community episode, but a good Community episode easily over an average MF episode.
I can't even think of an above or below average MF episode. Community's amazing every once in a while, but all over the map.

Modern Family is the same show, but it's gotten much much lazier. The average MF episode these days is worse than a bad Community episode methinks. An episode that is bad by Community's standards is generally a good episode of television in my opinion.
And, generally speaking, whenever I'm a fan of a show I'll at least like every episode until it clearly takes a turn for the worse. Currently, I feel that way about Community, P&R, Archer, Curb, Childrens Hospital, and last by definitely not least, Louie (if we're just talking comedies). There's not an episode of any of those comedies that I dislike (unless we count season one of Parks). On the other hand, I feel that shows like Modern Family and The Office have fallen so deeply into mediocrity that there are times when I can't be bothered with them at all. And then there's a show like It's Always Sunny that has the rare episode that I don't like but is generally pretty good anyway.
