The Kevin Dineen Appreciation Thread

A little early? I think not!

Ain't it nice to see a guy who shows quick minded intelligence and a sense of logic?! Even the way he speaks to the media...

Ain't it nice to see a coach who isn't standing idle chewing either his gum or his tongue instead of...coaching??

Unlike the other people we had to call coach, I actually become excited when I think of what he's done and how he's been as our coach!

Keep up the great work Coach Dineen!

YouTube videos encouraged

Well deserved thread.

He's everything to date I asked for; an exciting involved Coach who understands NHL players having been a star himself. Calls excellent timeouts (ex last night with 12 secs left) directs players, admits errors (did i pick the right guy from shootouts) etc.

Forget my opinion. Here is Weeks on this morning"s NHL ON THE FLY:

"This for the panthers was a watershed game; These cats dont back down; Dineen deserve lots of credit (as does tallon) for putting cats on right track.
*one of the nice turnaround stories in NHL; undercover story, but a great story nonetheless."

I'm becoming a bigger Weeks fan now than when he was with us

Love Dineen so far, even though Im sure there is ONE person who doesnt. I like what he has brought to the club, and Im sure he is still learning on the fly. The only thing I really want to see improved is the defense. I want to see them incorporate his offensive attack, with what we were doing defensively last year. Stay healthy, shore up the D, and we could make this interesting.

I'm not really a DeBoer hater or whatever. To be honest, I probably don't know enough about the game/systems to be hating coaches.

As a fan, my input is this.

Regarding the defense, I'd say yes and no.

I think this team is taking chances and it's obvious. Sometimes when the defense takes chances, it can backfire I suppose.

With that said, at this point, this team has to take chances on the backend. If not for Brian Campbell and basically everyone on defense jumping up, we'd probably be dead last in terms of goals scored at the moment considering only one of the forward lines (Flash, Weiss, Steeg) is truly producing.

While it often frustrates me a lot, I understand why we're doing what we're doing at the end of the day.

The play in our own zone can be better though. Then again, after practices every time they ask him what they're working on, he talks about "board play." So hopefully that's just a work in progress.

Head over to WQAM.com, and listen to Dineen's interview with Sid. Sid really hits him with the Markstrom/Teddy debate, and how he thinks "no question" Markstrom is the number one goalie. It sounds like Kevin wants to admit it, but he has to be politically correct.

I would like him to make Garrison the main PP pair.

I would also like to see Skille Matthias and Bergenheim on a line together.
They have the same "push forward, move those legs" tendencies.

Yeah, I think it's an exciting style of play. Of course the players on the roster allow for this to happen, as well.

We certainly know who Sid's starting goalie would be.

Speaking as a Miami Dolphins fan accustomed to Tony Sparano's drivel, Kevin Dineen is fantastic! I like that he shoots straight with us, no BS excuses about losses or unearned praise of his players when they play poorly. I always feel better about the direction of the Panthers after I watch one of his postgame interviews, win or loss.

Question and purely hypothetical.

If the Panthers make the playoffs (by winning their division or by any other means) and make it past the first round, do you think Dineen will be considered for the "Coach of the Year" award?

Or is this bogus?

Don't see why not. Hell, getting them in could make him a shoe-in.

eh... no different than most coaches. i thought pete (and JM for that matter) gave much more real insight than dineen does on a nightly basis.

would depend on what else happens around the league. this team is a bubble playoff team on paper. if a bubble team makes the playoffs and happens to win a round, is that "coach of the year" territory? hardly. it happens every year. but if there are no other compelling stories? OR if the team turns it up a notch and has a fantastic campaign, finishing toward the top of the standings and provides a great playoff series?

to the point of the thread, i think it's hard say at this point that he's been a difference maker. he seems like a good guy and to the extent he's a player's coach and is staying out of the way of the guys on the ice (mostly for better), i'd give him credit. i don't think there's any objective measure at this point that indicates he's "out-coaching" anyone. that said, we might end up with a different opinion when we see how things play out over a full season. the way he's handling the goaltender (very well, imo) and blue line situation (sitting ellerby, guds, etc.) as well as how he'll handle sammy vs. the rest when he's healthy might make all the difference in the world and might earn him some points, even if they aren't in the more technical category.

FACT is experts predict the Panthers to come next to last in the conference.

If they finish 8th or better, he will be a leading candidate.

Lol markstrom plays five good games and all of a sudden he's the number one goalie? I guess that's why he got sent down. Dineen has a lot too do with that decision. Theodore is the number one goalie.

Not trying to be a hater, but with the roster turnover I think voters will have a hard time pinning how much of the Panthers turnaround is credited to Dineen vs. the roster.

I ask myself that question everyday and I'm happy with him, but you have to be realistic here people, last years team was the worst the Panthers have ever iced.
