I think there is just enough talent as it is to spread out to three lines but it's got to be allocated properly. You can't devoid any line of speed because even if it works in the short term, it will get exposed when it counts in the playoffs. I'd rather see...

Marleau-Thornton-Pavelski
McGinn-Couture-Clowe
Havlat-Handzus-Mitchell

Inevitably, the problem is that our speed guys beyond Marleau and Havlat, i.e. McGinn and Mitchell, are not reliable enough offensively to make it work in the long run. And only McGinn actually has a real chance to improve to a point where he could be relied upon offensively but it's not going to be this year.

Mitchell does all right when he's the weakest component of a line (like last year with Pavs and Wellwood) so that third line could potentially work. My problem with that setup is that Clowe and Couture seemed to struggle mightily this season before Havlat came along so I don't see them thriving with Ginner. Maybe Ferriero would be a better option there since the three have had success in the past.

To be fair, they were playing with Tommy Wingels before Havlat got healthy. Wingels doesn't have the raw speed nor the physicality that McGinn has. McGinn and Couture have also played a long time with each other. Clowe would still be the board battler and McGinn can do a decent job fore-checking then going to the net while Couture floats into the scoring areas.

I wouldn't mind switching Mitchell or McGinn with Marleau on the first line. Marleau looked really good centering the second line the other day. As a center, he has a lot more room to use his speed.

I'm not really worried about the speed of the first line. After all Pavelski is the leading scorer without much skating speed at all. The line should be able to force a bunch of turnovers and contains one of the best passers in the league.

However I guess perhaps one can argue against the organizations stance on the difference between speed and quickness.

You can make up for speed with quick tape-to-tape passing and quickness ala Vancouver and Detroit. I actually wouldn't mind seeing

39-19-8
29-12-9

I can see what Todd McLellan is doing with going with a more balanced, 3 scoring lines, but I just don't see it working out that well with McGinn. Hopefully I'm wrong because he has the speed and the shot to be a solid third liner. Should've signed Wellwood.

A lot of Pavelski's scoring is in large part due to Patrick Marleau. Half of his goals are primarily assisted by Marleau. Marleau's speed opens up the ice for his linemates. He is the proven goal scorer that teams concern themselves most with.

What about the other half? If Pavs slows down a bit and Couture heats up, Marleau keeps the second line anchored, and the third line starts scoring who cares.

I don't expect pavs to actually end the season with 60 goals. The team shouldn't either

The other half is split between Jumbo, Boyle, and lolMurray. The thing is that it is not a good assumption to believe that Couture will heat up on a line with Jumbo and Pavs. There's little to no speed on that line and none of those guys are quick passers for the most part.

Besides that, like I had already said, it doesn't matter if it works in the short term, that kind of line will be exposed in the playoffs due to a severe lack of speed. You simply can't get through the playoffs with that kind of line.
