This gives some evidence to my theory that 7D becomes an option when the players understand the system.
Gervais and Gilroy are Lightning noobs too, but like Brewer coming on last season, it seems the system is easier for defensemen to grasp. Makes a certain amount of sense as who D1 and D2 are is not as important. In a 1-3-1, it could just be the high-man and the low-man. I haven't broken down tape or anything though, so I'm sort of speculating.
