Was the Pronger Trade Worth it?

Well IMO jury is obviously still out on this trade but the Flyers were 2 wins away from the trade accomplishing it's goal. Nevertheless, the costs are still being tabulated and becoming more clearer. I expect this thread to rise and fall in the upcoming years. With that here was the price thus far:

-Joffrey Lupul (serviceable winger that can net 20 goals per season on Avg)

-Former 1st rounder Luca Sbisa (Good young D man who should be an impact D man for years to come)

-2009 1st rounder (21st overall) John Moore (Projected as a solid D man)
*Pick was traded to Columbus by Anaheim in exhange for 2009 picks Kyle Palmieri (26th overall) and Matthew Clarke (37th overall-2nd round)

-2010 1st Rounder (29th overall) Emerson Etem

-2011 Conditional 3rd round pick to Anaheim (TBD)

Thoughts?

Agreed. Getting to watch Chris Pronger as a Flyer during a playoff run is priceless.

No trades have been worthy since 1974?

Lupul - (salary dump) overpaid dime a dozen winger. You can get a 50point $4mill winger for next to nothing in the current salary cap world

Sbisa - good d-prospect, too small to be a stud though

2 late 1st rounders (this hurts, as the Flyers are good at drafting here, but what can you do?)

As long as Holmgren's and the Flyers' refusal to seek a bonafide goaltender continues to permeate throughout the organization, then no, the trade wasn't worth it.

People overestimate Luca. I like the kid but he hasn't done anything to show he will be an impact dman. I think he can be a avg/good two way dman that is prone to bad positioning based on his play so far.

The trade was worth it because for the foreseeable future Pronger gives the Flyers the ability to shut down other teams top lines. Plus, he ignites the transition game with his passing and is great on the point during a PP.

Aside from that how many other players can you acquire that gives your team the swagger the Flyers have when they take the ice.

Or 1975.

We gave up a good amount for Pronger based on the assumption that he was the move that was going to take us to the top. He was easily our MVP, but we still didn't win, which means there was more that needed to be addressed.

The second we win, I'll be the first person to say it was worth it. As of now, the jury's still out.

Pronger wasn't the reason we lost in the Finals. But he was a huge reason as to why we made it to the Finals.

Totally worth it.

We certainly gave up a lot but the return justifies it.
It would have been nice to get Chris in his prime though and not on the back 9 of his career.

This.

I think it's a cop out to say "we didn't win yet so it's not worth it." If that's your logic behind evaluating every single trade then we haven't made a good trade in many decades. Coburn for Zhitnik was bad. Desjardins, Leclair, and the 3rd guy who's name I always forget for Recchi was bad. Re-acquiring Recchi was bad. It's too small minded to base everything on winning the Cup. The Cup is the big picture, the ultimate goal. Individual trades are small transactions. You can't use the big picture to judge the small pictures.

That is probably the single best trade I've seen by the flyers.

Lupul was a nice player, but he was given that big contract, and it became obvious that he was going to be moved that off-season. Sbisa, while a very good prospect, is probably over rated by most of us. The two first seemed like too much, I would think one would have been enough. But you have to keep in mind, we got Chris Pronger. We would not have gotten anywhere last year without him. He makes our team much better for the next 4 years then Sbisa, Lupul, and prospects would, yet alone that Lupul +Sbisa have a higher cap hit now.

I've said it since the trade became official. I love it. When you get the chance to get a player like Pronger, especially for what can be considered spare parts for a team like the Flyers, you do it.

In the salary cap era... those were not spare parts. Lupul, sure (he had to go because of his contract), but the rest were cheap assets that you really, really need under the salary cap.
