Just scared of having an old hardass as coach with the team being predominantly young..

This was an absolute 100% right move.

Nothing was going right in the Blues season so far. Big change needed to happen. Hopefully this sparks the team.

If Payne was going to be fired, I'd rather have Mellanby be the HC.

I don't think this will be a problem, because our young players(Berglund,Perron,Pietrangelo, etc.) are our BEST players. He doesn't have the option of putting these guys on the 4th line, unless he wants to lose.

I hope Hitchcock makes some coaching changes on the powerplay, Shaw has to go.

We can pretty much say goodbye to Perron, Oshie, Berglund, Stewart and I don't see Tarasenko chomping at the bit to come across the pond any longer.

Going from a "players type" coach to this crotchety old taskmaster is not going to be the answer.

This seems to me to be simply Armstrong wanting his people. This move will be a regret down the line.

Sure he will, can you say Arnott and Langenbrunner?

I'm not sure how to feel about this yet. I certainly don't mind hardass, defensive minded coaches, but is Hitch the answer? Who knows maybe this is the spark needed to get this team out of it's funk.

Does anyone else know who the other high profile coaches were out there?

Payne wasn't the problem. but this is an obligation most teams feel they need to do before they start tearing apart the core. Coaches are easy to deal with, you can't fire $4 million dollar per year goaltenders unfortunately.

Wasn't Payne his guy, though?

Didn't he make the choice to retain Payne after the 2009-2010 season?

Purely a move of Armstrong hiring his guy. Hitchcock is a good coach but a horse **** move by the Blues to dump Payne at 6-7. There is no doubt that it is still Murray's fault for all that ails the Blues.

Why I'm not worried:

1. The young players on this team are older, and are now important cogs. Hitchcock will use them.

2. The PK will improve. Almost every forward and defenseman on this roster can effectively PK, and Hitchcock is known for defensively responsible hockey.

3. The offensive talent from the defense will provide Hitchcock the ability to have a transition game, while having a defense-oriented playing style.

4. The PP will improve, because anything is better than what's going on right now.

Payne wasn't the problem, but Halak was? The problem was everything. Payne's job is to get his players to play and he failed at that.

I love how the majority of Blues fans didn't think Payne was the answer, but everyone hates this decision.

Bottomline, Payne did not get his players to perform at their capable level and there had to be a change.

Whats wrong with that line of thinking? If people think Hitchock will do worse then it makes complete sense.

This team will goes as goaltending does. Halak has been a disaster - for which Payne is paying the price. If Elliot can keep this solid goaltending which is a bit of stretch considering he is a backup then things look brighter. But without Halak I'm still a bit worried about having a successful season.

Then who would you rather have than Hitchcock? If Payne isn't the answer, then there is no reason keeping him on as head coach.

Never liked Hitchcock. He reminds of the guy from the Adam's family. Creepy.

Is there a reason for downgrading? Essentially that is what people with that line of thought think.
