Does someone here listen to New York Hardcore (NYHC) ? if so please post your favourite songs...I've always liked the genre's energy and listen to it now and then
Just finished listening to Epica's new album. First thoughts; it's Epica. They sound like they always do, although the new album lacks the (Relatively speaking.) heaviness and edge of Design Your Universe. It's a very polished album from a band that understands itself. Simone's voice still isn't strong enough for me, but her range is much improved and she actually sounds great. Mark Jansen's growls are really something though. I wish he'd start a real death metal band because his voice is brutal. Overall, another good effort by Epica, but nothing that will really blow you away.
So it appears that the cover artwork for Cannibal Corpse's upcoming album "Torture" has been released:
Talk about mailing it in. It's amazing how their coverart could go from the morbid magnificence that was featured on the front of say "Butchered At Birth" or "Tomb Of The Mutilated" to this....
Can we say appeasing to the Hot Topic crowd?
Update: It appears that that picture I had posted there awhile back isn't the full artwork after all. According to Wikipedia and others I've talked to who have now bought the new album:
Quote:
Although unlike other Cannibal Corpse covers where two would have to be illustrated (one censored and the other featuring the usual graphic violence) Torture includes a flap over the cover that depicts its graphic violence, which can only be opened once the product's plastic seal is removed.
This here is the true "uncensored" artwork. I'll link it so I don't get in trouble.
It's OK coverart but nowhere near as cool as the uncensored cover art for "Butchered At Birth" or "Tomb Of The Mutilated" IMO. And while it's obviously better than the 100% tame artwork for the last two Cannibal Corpse albums ("Kill" and "Evisceration Plague"), it doesn't feel or look at all like the classic Vince Locke artwork that he's done for Cannibal Corpse in the past.
Album artwork aside, has anyone bought or heard the new Cannibal Corpse yet? If so, how is it? I heard the one song from it entitled "Demented Aggression" a few weeks ago and wasn't impressed. I might pick the album up later on though to keep my Cannibal Corpse discography complete, but I dunno...
As I've said before, since about 2004's "The Wretched Spawn", IMO Cannibal Corpse albums have gotten progressively worse overall. I still say that the 4 first albums they released with Chris Barnes on vocals totally destroy anything they've released since 1995 with Corpsegrinder.
Nightwish is so damn awesome now. Imaginarium is the best nightwishalbum and Toumas is one hell of a composer
His songs sometimes reminds me of Hans Zimmer on their new album.
Tuomas is genius...this time the production didn't cost as much as the previous album did but still the level is very high... plus in this new album the songs fit Anette Olzon's voice way much better... Nightwish is also awesome live and the show they put on is top level...some great pics from their tour:

bad brains banned in DC, best album ever, was recorded in NY after leaving washington
cro-mags
hoping its a censored cover. or like all that blood is hiding the actual cover.
its the same thing as the cool name titles before.... now the covers are as boring as the titles... disappointing.
i dont hate the new song. but still havent heard the last 3 albums.
yeahh. it was kinda obvious. even if its the first time they do it.
i liked the real cover but its too empty. i would have added a few more people.
I have a few wishes I always wanted to see in metal,
1. I always wanted to see some metal band come out of nowhere and achieve the same level of success/popularity as Metallica and write lots of kickass metal songs.
2. I want an awards show like the Grammys but only for metal. I also wished metal had its own award show back when metal started. Awards would include things like
-Best New Metal Band
-Best Debut Album
-Best Black Metal Album
-Best Death Metal Album
-Best Thrash Metal Album
-Best Power Metal Alnbum
-Best Metal Cover
-Metal Album of the Year
-Metal Single of the Year
-Metal Band of the Year.
3. I wish Metallica and Megadeth made an album together.
4. I want the BIG FOUR to tour North America extensively.
5. They need to make more movies like Ghost of Mars (movies with metal soundtracks/scores).
6. I want Tom Araya of Slayer to write murder mystery novels. He would be good at it I think.
7. Sam Dunn of Global Metal needs to make Global Metal 2 where he should visit Australia, South Africa, Iceland, Russia, and Canada.
most of the bands i know from finland are metal.
i like the Larves. they're more like old-school d-beat punk.

i gave it a try. my opinion doesnt really matter, as im a fan of chris barnes and havent listened to the latest albums, and it was an mp3.... but its not that bad....
the riffs are fun, more "technical" than what ive heard from them in the past. the vocals aren't the same growl all album long and the drumming isnt half-assed blast-beats.
overall there's a few songs i enjoyed over the "single" that was being promoted around the web.
Rabid - is a song i enjoyed. (5 seconds bass solo at the end. lol. )
Cannibal Corpse are the same as Slayer. You know exactly what you are going to get & they aim for their fan base no one else. I've never been a huge fan of the post-Barnes stuff. I like them better when there was more of a crushing rhythm & less emphasize on speed.
Anyone heard the new Mark Morton & Dez songs? It's Morton trying to sound like Down & Dez trying to sound like Zakk Wylde.
Hell seems to freeze over. Wintersun announced today they're most likely to publish their second album 'Time' at the end of this summer. Only 4 songs, 40mins in total. 2nd part of 'Time' should come out next January, also 4 titles with 40mins of playing time. Good god.

My thoughts exactly. As I've said before, for the past christ knows how many years pretty much all of their albums have sounded the same. At least the Barnes era had some variety. Therefore again as I've said, the Barnes era of Cannibal Corpse >>>>> their current era from '95 onwards with George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher IMO. And to me, it's not even close.
Not only did Barnes write some disgustingly twisted and great lyrics (compared to Corpsegrinder who'se barely written any in the now 17 years he's been in the band..nor will he write lyrics), but Barnes's vocals were/are alot better whether he was live or in the studio IMO. George however may sound good album wise, but if you see or even just watch a clip of him live with Cannibal, he mispronounces alot of the lyrics or mixes them up and OR can't keep up with the music very well.
Plus like you said, I also love how raw and thrashy and "crunchy" the first four Cannibal Corpse albums with Chris Barnes are. Nowadays their albums are way too polished production wise, and while the songs may be alot more technical and harder to play compared to the Barnes era stuff, they just scream "hey we're playing technical for the sake of being technical." And as a result of this, most of the Corpsegrinder songs and albums all basically sound the same.
Really when it comes to the post-Barnes era of Cannibal Corpse, the only album I still listen frequently is "Gore Obsessed" from 2002. Everything else...meh. I'll stick to the Barnes era thank you.
Even in terms of stage presence, Corpsegrinder reminds me of this big, muscled, dare I say "jock" of a metal frontman who tries too hard to be "brutal" onstage and just comes off as silly as a result. However if you watch a live clip with Barnes, he genuinely had that psychotically evil vibe to him.
Here's an example:
Song starts around 1:50 after the toking action.
Christ I wish they could legitamately release more rare live stuff with Barnes. The man was such a beast back in the day. Too bad nowadays he's smoked his voice to utter crap and looks like a homeless person.

Which is what a lot of death metal bands do now. I don't want an album that is 40 minutes of sweep picking. I listen to Six Feet Under more than new CC.
Corpsegrinder is actually a pretty big dude. I've been into weight lifting my entire life so I'm a solid 6' 240lbs & he ran over me at a Mayhem festival once. He was rushing to his signing booth or something caught me from the back with decent force. Another reason I don't like him.

3. I wish Metallica and Megadeth made an album together. If Mustaine doesn't sing it would be cool
4. I want the BIG FOUR to tour North America extensively.Who doesn't want that?
5. They need to make more movies like Ghost of Mars (movies with metal soundtracks/scores).
6. I want Tom Araya of Slayer to write murder mystery novels. He would be good at it I think. He should start by writing good music again instead of just changing the key of the songs & calling it a new album
7. Sam Dunn of Global Metal needs to make Global Metal 2 where he should visit Australia, South Africa, Iceland, Russia, and Canada. No he doesn't. He needs to stop making film altogether. He lets his personal favorite bands dominate instead of telling a complete story
8. The BIG FOUR should make an album together.
Felt like making some comments on your wishes. Especially the award ones.

Yeah I hear ya. That's why a good 80% of Death metal I like = old stuff from up until about '94 or so. Screw all the current "jerk off your guitar 10000 notes a minute" technical crap of today. Gimme the crunchy, raw, dark, and evil sounding headbangably catchy riffs of old school Death Metal anyday.
As for Six Feet Under, overall I dig em' mostly up until "Maximum Violence". After "Maximum Violence" (which was their best IMO) they're pretty hit or miss I think. Although there are a few more recent songs of theirs that I don't mind and I'd actually love a hell of alot more if it wasn't for Barnes's vocals being so crappy now. I guess our ears are just too spoiled with his vocal awesomeness back in his Cannibal Corpse days I suppose.
And ya got "Pulverized" by Corpsegrinder eh? Did he at least apologize?

No. I turned around like I was going jack him up & realized it was him & he just kept motoring. I saw him plow into some kid in front of me as well. I know he has places to be but he pretty much went Full Back on the Merch area.
i met corpsegrinder at polliwog 97. i was like 12 and the dude was really nice. he stayed to chat with me and sign me autographs, cuz i was such a groupie.
sfu's last good album was maximum violence indeed. but its hard to hate on those stoner rock covers albums they released. i like how even kiss plays faster than them.
to me the earlier stuff is better. (songs like lycantropy , suffering in ecstasy)
