He is. But Dutch law prevents him from having dual-citizenship so it's one or the other. And if he got rid of his Dutch citizenship it'd be harder for him to find a job in Europe.

I meant FIFA laws should allow him to play for Canada without holding citizenship

As he gave up his Canadian citizenship he no longer has a connection to the nationality and thus isn't eligible to play for Canada unless he gets it back.

Agreed. I would rather play for Italy no questions asked.

The thing is he has no chance to actually play for the Netherlands. He wasn't a starter on a team that was relegated from La Liga.

Whatever. This whole nationalism thing is ridiculous.

Does anyone who follows this team closely think they can make round 3? Honduras seems a lot weaker than last year.

Agreed on Honduras. They are definitely not as strong as they were 4 years ago.

I think Canada has a decent shot. If they can get some points away in Panama or Honduras and beat Cuba at home then I think they are good to go. Also, if Cuba can do anything against Honduras that would go a long way.

Hopefully Cuba can hold on for at least 1 draw against Honduras or even beat them at home. Would definitely help Canada's chances

Honduras is terrible now and their team is in disarray...their manager already talked about completely blowing the team up for the qualifiers in September. They sort of remind me of us from four years ago, although they do get lucky by getting Cuba twice with the ability to build some momentum. I would not be surprised at all if they draw in Havana though...their style of play is not set out for that field.

They really lost a ton of their creativity when some of the older guys from four years ago retired. Players like Costly, Suazo and Palacios are out of form and the youth ranks are not bringing up the same calibre of player.

Canada pretty much needs one of the following

- 7 points from next three matches (W/D Panama, W Cuba)
- We don't collapse and Honduras drops two points against Cuba
- We don't collapse and Panama beats Honduras again

All of those are pretty attainable. A win at home against Panama is imperative though.

Under FIFA rules you need citizenship to play for a nation, FIFA eligibility rules are in addition to citizenship. Prior to 2004 nations like Qatar and Togo put Brazilian kids in their leagues, gave them citizenship after a year and played them on their national team. The FIFA eligibility rules were designed to address this issue, so now it’s possible to have citizenship of a nation and not be eligible to play for that nation under FIFA rules.

Even a guy like Marc Bircham had Canadian citizenship

Why? It's a 'national' team.

2-0 win for Canada last night over Trinidad & Tobago in a tune up for WCQ. Qualifying starts back up in under a month. 3 guys made their senior debuts last night, including Teibert who apparently played quite well.

JDG2 will play for Canada, but I don't know when...

He made an interesting comment about how the new generation of Dutch players are coming into the national team...

He's right, but once he's passed over, he'll realize he's not ever gunna get called.

It's now or never, and he's not good enough.

The questions will the Dutch name their new squad in time...

And I believe that we will get Hoilett, we're better than Jamaica.

De Guzman will never play for Canada, he isn't giving up his Dutch passport to play for Canada.

Then he'll never play international football.

He wants to play for the Dutch. That doesn't mean he'd want to play for Canada. Remember that a lot of qualifying games go on during the season, and maybe he doesn't want*to travel across the ocean to play in a qualifying match in a terribad central american stadium.

If Canada made the world cup, I guess that he'd try to join.

If he's truly proud to be Canadian then he should relish this not act as if it's a negative. That's part of qualifying.

He probably would...

One he's gunna wake up and realize that he's not good enough for the Oranje.

That's not the only reason he has the Dutch passport. That passport got him a job at Swansea and will elsewhere for the duration of his career so he isn't going to just get rid of it.

Giving up his passport now would make it harder for him to get work in Europe than it would have been if he'd never had it at all.

Clearly the guy's not uber-patriotic, but that's his choice and good on him. He doesn't seem to be losing sleep over it
