I'd say that's a pretty accurate assessment, the team's naturally going to have more confidence in their starting goaltender's ability to make saves or bail them out compared to the back-up. However, I'm sure Bernier's record against Nashville last season was mentioned several times prior to the game and they all (including JB) had a little confidence boost. At this point I'd be surprised if Quick started any games against Nashville this season, not because Bernier knows how to beat them, but because Nashville games are a great chance to give Quick a rest without having the rest of the team play a little uneasy.

I think this has to do with a few things. One, Bernier is really cool and collected. Two, he's played less, and doesn't need to be thrown off his game when he isn't the starter. Three, Quick has defended himself before and he's a really fiery guy, so maybe the squad doesn't feel like they have to protect him. Maybe they think he'll do it himself.

Cloutier, and Im supprised no ones said zeiler yet. Lol.

I think what makes it so bad with penner is that he has the talent, and hes done it before.

Bernier probably asked the rest of the team for more protection.

It was good to see Penner smiling out there...I was at the game and it wasn't just the two assists, he was all over the ice and spent a lot of time in the slot.

Except for that one stupid penalty, he played a strong game. I hope this is the start of what he really needs to be doing out there...causing the distraction in the slot and opening the door quick shots from the wing like Martinez and Richards took to score goals on.

Maybe Quick has been getting lessons from the greatest self-protecting goalie in the league... Hextall

Shin chop anyone?

Haha. Quick has been a bit more cocky with his game by not letting players run him. It's nice to see. I loved the kind of player Hextall was. Too bad it wouldn't work anymore

Unfortunately that doesn't happen (as much). Looking through youtube videos of that era I just keep thinking how fun hockey games must have been back then.

But if you want to state he's one of the worst players on the ice in terms of skill, you are flat out wrong. The guy is a beast when he wants to be.

Honestly, if DL gave up a 1st, 3rd and Teubert for a Dustin Penner who played his hardest game in, game out, I'd have praised that deal in every language I could find a translator for. Skill wise, Penner is one of the best on the team, problem is he doesn't give it his all most of the time, and now he's fighting the puck which doesn't make things better. Penner's working harder now than he has in any other season I've seen, and the guy in the past consistently reached 20-30 goals and 45+ points as a floater. What does that tell you about his skill. When he's on, he's like a poor man's Mario or Lindros in how he can use his size and good wheels for a big guy to just dominate the game. It's to bad he doesn't do it all the time, he'd be a 40 goal guy if he did.
He used to be a decent player with Anaheim. Getzlaf and Perry might have boosted his performance, but at one time, he was pretty good. He had some hot streaks with Edmonton, but I never saw him play up to his performance with the Ducks.

But man, with the Kings, he can't control the puck, his wrist shot is pathetic, he has trouble connecting passes, and he can barely skate. He falls constantly. Work ethic and athleticism are just as much a part of being a hockey player as skill and vision. He has strength, but his endurance is crap. What good is it to have skill if you can only harness it for a couple seconds per shift? Even at that, he doesn't have much skill that I've seen; at least, not with the Kings. What about his game says "skill" to you?

Speaking of protecting Bernier, I really want to know what the hell Hornqvist said to him that made Doughty want to punch Hornqvist in the face.

Skill does no good when you can't harness it. That's the whole reason I never wanted us to get him in the first place and was so adamant at the time we would hate this trade. He has the skill, but he rarely displays it.

But skill doesn't just disappear like that in one year. A year ago he was still showing his usual 1-2 flashes a week of what he could do. That didn't magically disappear at his age, it's just not coming out anymore. Why? Coaching? Perhaps? Penner being Penner? Maybe. Linemates? Unlikely. Confidence? Likely a part of it.

Remember this goal? It was just 10 months ago.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyOIRTavAaU

Nice hands huh? Those haven't disappeared, they're still there.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ye2cB...eature=related

The finish wasn't good, but the drive and skating were pretty damn good for a big guy. That's 18 months ago. That didn't just disappear either.

And I like this Penner goal. Nice wheels, nice hands

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXdSg9cGFYs

That's all still there. Those are all from within the last 18 months and at the age of 29, he isn't getting to old to show it. It's up to Penner, his linemates and the coaching staff to make it come to the forefront again.

If ever any player was a living example of the reason to "keep it simple" it's Mr. Penner. Get to the slot, get to the net, wait for a pass, take a shot.

Hornqvist probably didn't say anything. He didn't vacate the crease and actually skated towards Bernier in the crease. That is a big no-no. The team responded appropriately as Hornqvist was just trying to spark his team after falling behind 2-0.
