The difference is type of play and developmental styles.
The closer example would be Potter as they both developed in the A, and are offensive minded. But he hasn't shown anything at the NHL level thus far to prove he's anything more than a mid ranged AHL defencemen.

For offensive minded players, Potter is showing more in a smaller sample. You're right that Chorney has played more in the NHL, but on the worst team in the league two years in a row. Potter on the other hand played on New York and the Penguins. Much harder to break the line up, don't you think? Not to mention Potter is holding his own in his own end. As shown by a career -30 for Chorney and a +1 for Potter. Sure he's 27, but that's only 3 years older than Chorney. Give Chorney those 3 years in the AHL and let's see what happens.

haha, passed up by everyone else, we be at the tops and still pick him up. interesting as doug mclean said. doesn't hurt to have him in okc. its nice to see him back, still has a career ahead of him and he knows how we play. does st. louis need to pick up part of his contract now???

You might be right and you could easily be wrong as well.
I bet the same thing was said about this Corey Potter too when he spent 4 full seasons in college. Then most of a season in the ECHL, followed by another 4 full seasons in the AHL. But he is looking pretty good right now.
Edit - Oops I see someone already brought up the Potter example. I would bet if you looked around the league you could find a number of other similar examples though. Just thinking really quickly here I bet you could throw a guy like Rob Scuderi on the list.
It's pretty relevant to the idea that Chorney may still improve in a few years.

only proves he's not NHL calibre, as other teams wouldn't be able to assign him to AHL without putting him back on waivers. if another team did claim him and placed him on waivers for the purpose of reassignment, St. Louis would probably reclaim and assign him to AHL before we could.

Seems like you were saying all that is he will ever be, but maybe you were talking about this season only and it was not worded that well?

Not surprised that the Oilers picked him back up. As I said, they have a limited number of quality dmen in the organization and for depth purposes they can use Chorney in the AHL. He'll be one of the first in line when more injuries/suspensions hit again.
We should be happy we just got a good ahl dman who is also a good person. If he does not play 80 nhl games this season he will be UFA in the summer. So probably we will loose him. He can help Barons now that is great.
Only way he can be in this organization is that if we got injury plug again he got call to Oilers and play well and at least 22 games.

Ah, definitely an embellishment considering where he is now, but no I meant my initial "argument" with "thenuge" poster. My inital "post" is certainly an embellishment, but it's towards how I felt as of now.
Even though, I don't feel Chorney has what we need or what it takes in the NHL. He's played games in the NHL for two separate teams and has been sent down for a reason. It's true that Potter had done the same at the same age, but we can look at the teams and the point is made.
Chorney - The Oilers.. no explanation needed. The Blues in which they just needed a coaching change this season.

13.22 When a Club claims a Player on Regular, Re-Entry or Unconditional Waivers, and, subsequently, in the same season it requestsWaivers on the same Player and the original owning Club is the successful and only Club making a Waiver claim, then the original owning Club shall be entitled to Loan such Player to a club in another league within thirty days without further Waivers being asked; provided that such Player has not participated in ten or more NHL Games (cumulative) and remained on an NHL roster more than thirty days (cumulative) following such successful claim.
my interpretation is that Chorney can be assigned to the AHL as he has not played 10 NHL games since he was claimed by St. Louis.
I think the 10 games/30 days would be reset from when the blues put him on waivers.

Whats with the infatuation over contracts? It's not the off season, its not like we are going to be signing players. We have what 49 now? so we have 1 left in case we need to make a trade at the deadline, hell if we really need to make more trades we could always just include Chorney in it to rid ourselves of the contract.
Its not a big deal and if you think the player will be an asset to your team then why not claim him. contracts are apparently over rated during the season.
