this move makes perfect sense. backstrom scoring among the league leaders without a lot of help from ovechkin. so much for the whole backstrom leaching off 8 scenarios.

maybe ov is creating space for backstrom to work. johansson's game by its nature will create space for Ovechkin to work. Pure speed. Its worth a try.

Team not playing very well; coach shuffles lines. What's there to see here?

And I'm not just harping on goals. He is playing the worst defense of his career right now.
If you think he'll score 65 goals ever season you're mistaken. Backstrom being with him doesn't hurt him btw.

Gretzky aside (Gretzky seems to be the exception to most hockey rules), isn't it pretty normal for the best goal scorers to have about 4-5 50 goals seasons and then sort of level out to something less than that, but not exactly terrible? And isn't 30 goals 80-90 points and 1+ ppg in the playoffs not exactly terrible?

It was also the prevailing belief that his style of play would probably cause him to hit and pass his peak earlier than most, wasn't it? I don't think it's pushing it to say that he'll definitely have one or two more 50 goal seasons, I just don't think they'll come in as close proximity as most people would like when they think of Ovechkin dominating the league. And 30-40 might actually be exactly where he is on average for the next 5 years.

I think 2-4 in the last six is more important that 9-4 based on a 7-0 start. I doubt Bruce has the luxury of going 2-8 at any point this season.

I think we can expect more 'random', even though they actually make plenty of sense (and we just complain because it's Boudreau), line changes this season than in seasons past.

That said, and in the spirit of conversation, what have you seen consistently from the top two lines that makes this such a big deal? The worst that's going to happen, in my opinion, is that they're going to have a spotty unbalanced performance which puts us right back where the top two lines have been for most of the season anyway.

In b4 Caps lose, and OV/Semin are spotted post game laughing with Kovy.

Ok we aren't playing well, so BB switches up the lines. That would be a fine excuse, if he didn't switch up the lines after we played one of our best games against Carolina. This has always annoyed me, and even Knuble has talked bad about this practice before.

What makes you think it's for ***** and giggles? There's quite obviously valid reasons for mixing the lines up.

What was the valid reason after the 5-1 win?

It's early in the season for a Capitals' team that for the first time that I can remember has the real possibility of rolling out 4 NHL quality lines. It takes time in the regular season to evaluate how the guys that made the team out of preseason play together -- especially with the injuries factored in.

I'd say 20 games before things start becoming more concrete. Maybe even 25-30.

Yet BB typically changes lines until about 70-75 games in.

I think it the real reason we start slow in games. Honestly, we are losing because the defense is hanging the goalies out to dry.

And because the top two lines aren't really doing much to pin the other team down in their own zone and relieve the pressure.

It's no real surprise that our best D-man goes down and the rest of the corps looks absolutely normal, but there's no excuse for the top two lines to be playing second fiddle to the third line -- especially not the 1st as it was assembled.

Plus, there are the dumb penalties and the terrible PK.

Some would say chicken or egg here.

Though I have no problem shuffling lines every 6-10 games to create options come playoffs. Winning the regular season isn't the goal.

I'm actually glad Bruce is switching Mojo and Nicky. Semin is playing very well, IMO, and he will benefit from having Backstrom as his center.

Agreed this is the biggest question I've had on Bruce this year. How Hamr gets the nod over Schultz tonight is beyond me I thought double nickle has played decently this year.

Well, Green's in -- and I think it was pretty much consensus on this board that Hamrlik was doing just fine when paired with Green, wasn't it?
