Nice write-up. Has there been any clarification on his eligibility to compete for the U.S. in international competition? I know USA Hockey had a blurb on him recently so I hope this will get settled with the IIHF.

I believe you need to be playing in the U.S. for two season in order to qualify. That is the reason Matteau could not play in the U18's (which was extremely unfortunate). Unsure if him going to play in the QMJHL will hold him back from the U20's assuming he gets an offer to join, but I'm sure they won't hold him back.

Two years, not two seasons, as he spent 2010-11 with the U17 team and 2011-12 with the U18 team.

Quote:
The International Ice Hockey Federation is allegedly not allowing Matteau, born in Chicago, Il., to participate because he has not played two consecutive years (not seasons) in the United States after the age of 10, according to Kevin Allen of USA Today.

That's what I meant. Thanks for the clarification.

His father was a Ranger -- junior will play just across the Hudson.

Matteau spent the majority of his life in Chicago, played for the USNDP, and doesnt sound a lick french...

great pick for the Devils, love the irony here with this pick...plus the kid is just a massive pain in the ass to play against...

For the most part, I think we're more amused than anything else
He seems perfect for DeBoer's system though, so I hope he makes it to the NHL.

It might be a bit awkward purchasing a Matteau Devils jersey some day, but other than that I like the pick.

If he becomes anything around those guys, I'd be thrilled. Seems like he's got the heart to go for it too.

Matteau spent is youth playing 50/50 between USA and Canada. He is perfectly billingual and will play on the North-Shore of Montreal next year in Boisbriand of the QMJHL where his father is an assistant coach.

It's a great pick for the Devils and the irony is indeed, amazing. He is a guy that absolutely loves the rough stuff and has good offensive skills.

I will see him all winter long, so I'll be able to provide updates for Devils fans.

The scouting reports remind me of a previous Devils pick - Patrice Cormier. Fair comparison?

He received his second suspension (1 game) of the year today. His team added an extra game despite his father being an assistant coach. The head coach was serious when he said he wouldn't accept his antics.

I like the play of this kid, very fiesty, and obviously physical. He will eventually get his face pounded in however. Definetly needs to tone it down a bit on the dirtyness. I can see him being similar to, although not as good, Milan Lucic at the NHL level.

Not surprised, Bouchard won't tolerate that crap from any of his players.

He received an invite from Chicoutimi's fighter after the hit but he didn't respond. His one fight in the league was against a non-fighter so I doubt he'll agree to face Noreau!

Really not that bad of a hit. Yeah, you can't shove a guy in that position, but he didn't violently ram him into the boards and if you ask me the guy sold it pretty good (shot up pretty quick, didn't he?). Five and a game sure, but don't think it's worth the suspension.

In any case, he's gotta learn to pick his spots better and temper his emotions. He'll learn.

Massive dive, the other guy should have gotten a game misconduct for embarrassing the ref. I hope he has 4 or 5 suspensions by seasons end.

Sam will have plenty of time to take him on in the NHL (easily one of the most improved prospects from the time of his draft year).
