Conditioning for staal's going to be a huge issue.
I can't believe how much conditioning I lose when I stop going to the gym for a few weeks, I can't imagine what it's like for them.

Exactly. It makes sense because none of those players really bring anything else to the table. I am not sure what is more surprising though, that Philly decided to do that, or that they carry (3) extra skaters

You mean extract punishment? He's not going to be "protecting" him as much as taking care of business after the fact.

Thought he looked really tentative tonight, but it was his first game back. Will be great to have him back at full strength.

Looked pretty solid, just a few steps behind. Also a little tentative when it came to being physical and getting into the scrums around the goal.

I thought he looked a tiny bit tentative, but for the most part... I had forgotten how smooth on the puck Staal is.

Looked a little slow, but besides that he was fine. IQ and everything still in tact.

looked meh. but what do you expect, if it wasnt the winter classic he'd almost assuredly be out another 2-3 weeks.

He was decent. Played some good PK minutes.
So many unusual circumstances around this game that it isn't really a great opportunity to evaluate him.

If he feels he's ready to go, why hold him back for 2 weeks?
there's no substitute for match-fitness IMO, they are better getting him out there in limited minutes so he can work his way up

Just seeing Marc out there, instead of Woywitka was a relief.

He wasn't Marc Staal at his best tonight but he looked better than I expected besides that play on Simmonds.

of course he feels ready to go...its the winter classic
if it wasnt the winter classic or a playoff situation, the Rangers arent going to let Staal play tonight. he was cleared for contact what, less than a week ago? no games since last year? you need more time than that to get back into shape. he looked slow, and easily winded....again, its not surprising, and again, i would have let him play tonight if i were the coach. its a big game for both these teams.

Staal was predictably rusty. I thought he did a good job of moving the puck up the ice, though.

Listening to the Lundqvist post-match presser, he wasn't just paying token lip-service to Marc Staal. You can tell that Hank got a huge boost mentally from Staal being in the lineup and I would imagine that feeling was replicated throughout the locker room.

made several good stops on opposing players and generally looked solid, if not his usual self. Nice to have him back

I was actually impressed with Staal's play given the circumstances.
