Sabres new-found success at the dot

Buffalo is 4th in the league in faceoffs at 52.5% this year

10-11 they were 27th at 47.7%.
09-10 they were 23rd at 48.6%.
08-09 they were 28th at 47.4%.
07-08 they were 25th at 48.6%.

You have to go back to Drury's last year here to find the last time they were above 50% and outside the bottom 10 in the league.

Obviously, key factors are Connolly/Hecht not taking faceoffs this year and Goose being Goose (59.8%), as well as the revelation that has been Jason Pominville (52.8%). But Brad Boyes, despite taking only 22 draws, has won 15 of them (68.2%). And perhaps more overlooked is the guy who leads the team in faceoffs taken, and winning 55.7%. That guy is Derek Roy.

Roy:
10-11 46.4%
09-10 50.4%
08-09 50.7%
07-08 51.2%

While he's always been average at the dot, he has been tremendous this year. Hopefully he can continue at this pace.

Luke Adam and Ville Leino has struggled at the dot. But having three dependable faceoff winners--and 1 on each line--is really very important. Plus all three kill penalties, where faceoff wins are huge.

Maintaining this success at the dot will really help the Sabres in the puck possession game which they want to play.

The numbers are pretty telling and a great endorsement of his work. This is just such a dramatic improvement--it'd be one thing if it just went up a few percentage points...but to go from one of the worst to one of the best is just unbelievable.

And the best part is the average can still go up. Luke Adam has tons of room to improve. I'm really looking forward to seeing his progress by year's end.

And don't forget how useful having Goose is. Past years he always stayed after practice to help guys (and practice himself) with faceoffs.

I am not being a Debbie Downer about those stats.
I just want to know what were those faceoffs percentages in those years listed thru the first 14 or so games of each season? You know, apples to apples comparison.

Adam looked great at the dot against Ottawa too. If that continues, you're talking about an asset that is tough to truly quantify how valuable it is.

It's only a meaningful question if there exists some unobserved bias that makes Sabres' players percentages decline over time (for example, if opposing teams' centres start figuring out their tendencies).

I'm not saying it's impossible, but it does seem like a stretch.

Oh, I think it's also a meaningful question if 14 games is not a large enough sample size - maybe these things tend to go in hot and cold spurts, and we're just in a good place right now. Like how Thomas Vanek is on pace for 200 points or whatever he's on pace for.
