Less than two months later I have to retract part of this post. I was too disillusioned by Kyle Quincey's hot start when I made this comment. Still, Colorado will tender him as long as he isn't traded.

I think Quincey is a big question mark right now. I mean, I think he might be spectacular when he gets back to play, but there's also a really good chance that he gets next to nothing done. Avs should see that card now anyway, not a lot to lose.

Barrie getting his debut right now, so I think it's a good moment to bump this up.

So the scenery is changing a little bit. It doesn't seem like Barrie and Elliott are quite ready yet, and Hunwick is stepping up big time in the last few games. Squirrel vomit is also gone.

I would be fine with retaining Hunwick for a short term contract as a lower end defenseman. I'm also fine with retaining Wilson and O'Brien. Pending no FA signings

EJ
Hejda
O'Brien
O'Byrne
Wilson
Hunwick

Still a bit soft, but they've shown that they can play well in a regular season situation.

A top 4 of
Elliott
Barrie
Gaunce
Siemens

in the LEM next year would be

Sorry, but we can't have Hunwick as a regular 6th defenseman. If he is re-signed, at all, it has to be as the 7th guy who fills in sometimes. Yeah, he's playing half decent right now, but a playoff team does not have Hunwick playing night in and night out.

Only our shutdown pair of ROB and Hejda are signed into next season. Johnson and Wilson are RFAs who will be re-signed. I have a good feeling O'Brien will stick around.

I feel we absolutely need to sign or trade for a proper EJ partner. That's the next step for our team, IMO.

Siemens still has a year of CHL eligibility so I don't think he can be in the AHL next year?

Our potential call-ups will have to be Elliott, Barrie, and Gaunce. I'd give Gaunce a long look as he's posting good numbers in Lake Erie (+15 on a team full of minuses). I wonder if Chouinard will get a chance? His offensive numbers are down dramatically this year in Lake Erie.

I like O'Brien back at a reasonable rate for 1 maybe 2 years. Hunwick kind of depends upon who could step up. But if he's a 7th guy, I'm okay with that too.

I'd like it if they resign Wilson, the resigning of O'Brien IMHO depends on what they think about Gaunce. Hunny's a good solution for #7 but I doubt he'll get an offer from Colorado.

I'll bump this. For two reasons
1) Situation has changed because of signing Zanon and trading Quincey out
2) For people to adjust what they thought before.

Personally I think Hunwick has a chance now to be at top-6, but I would rather see him traded. The problem with Avs-d is that there's too much "quantity over quality", a lot of replacement parts for the bottom pair, but really no-one to be either #1 or Johnson's pair.

Facing the facts:

Hejda - Johnson
Wilson - O'Byrne
Zanon - O'Brien
Hunwick

I saw that even Mike Chambers was speculating that they'll go after Carle and then dump one of the defensive guys.

Chambers tweeted about Carle today or was this somewhere else?

Things could change quickly with a trade. I could see the Avs swapping out a stay-at-home defenseman or two for former University of Denver star Matt Carle, a unrestricted free agent with the Flyers, given that the Avs are short on puck-moving/power-play guys on the back end IF Elliott and Barrie are in Lake Erie. Carle has deep roots in Denver, although his younger brother just left DU for a USHL coaching job in Green Bay.

So assuming Carle comes, how does the defensive situation turn? Will the odd man out be O'Brien?

I'd like to see this if Carle signs here:

Carle - EJ
Wilson - ROB
Hejda - Zanon/SOB

Even with Carle our second pairing looks bad.

I just read on an Austrian Sport page, that the Avs have signed Thomas Pck to a 1 year contract worth 550.000 $. A Two-Way contract.

Just in case you guys didn't know

Thanks for the post, but we already know. It's been discussed in our AHL thread.

I have a hard time seeing him in the NHL. Cleveland, 125.000 $.
