Who else but the ultimate underdog himself scoring the winning goal? Amazing effort and a good play by Saku that lead to the goal. The guy gets me excited like I'm kid again, all the time. One of the toughest guys in the league!!!
Great game by Saks and his posse! IF Canada were to lose the Final to Koivu and the Finns, I'd be able to live with it. The same cannot be said for USA of course...it's never even remotely OK to lose to them!
Koivu is in great shape by the way. Please hockey gods, let there be a season...
I remember the first time I saw Saku was in the Jr world champianships the year the everyone and I mean EVERYONE has their eyes on Lindros. The Nordiques had purposly lost almost every game in order to get the first choice in the draft ( Lindros ) Canada played the Finns and Canada won the game. Yes Lindros showed that he was the the next coming but Saku was the only Finnish player that did not cringe at the thought of taking on Lindros. Throwing his body at him bouncing off and doing it all over again and never quiting. So when the Habs picked Saku Koivu at that years draft and everyone said WHAT ! Saku Who ? from where ? I knew just who the Habs had picked a player with a ton of heart.
God gave Saku a diminutive body but the heart of a great lion. Saku brings that heart to every game and over the years in Montreal, so much so that when he came back from his cancer treatments the Fans gave his a standing ovation that lasted 10 minutes and brought a tear to your eye. Saku was touched and it was clearly visible. The Heart of the Lion was back to play and Saku had slamed deaths door shut in its face. What a moment !
Today Saku is front page of every newspaper in Finland, well no big surprise to me!
The little guy that makes the best of what God gave him, and congratulations to his parents for instilling in Saku some of the best character traites of the human condition. What a great job these two did. They should be just beaming with pride right now and well deserved.
I for one am thrilled that Saku got the winner in last night game, but lets be serious for a moment. Jere Lehtinen has been the only one in Team Finlands top line who actually has played well. Last night Saku was almost invisible until that game winner (apart for those couple of chances, some credit must go to USA's checking line no doubt). And that has been the story in pretty much every game in this tournament. The 2nd line (Peltonen-Jokinen-Ruutu) has been our best line no doubt.
Selänne and Koivu aren't clicking. Selänne makes weird decisions and loses the puck all the time and Koivu somehow doesn't seem to have his usual hustle out there. I hope it was just the jet lag in last nights game, but he was really moving slowly out there.
Without Selänne and Koivu Team Finland doesn't have a prayer in final. Not that they have that big chance anyhow, Canada seems impossible to beat. But IF the top line wakes up and they can keep the game close until the end... who knows.
