Jordan Staal to Buffalo

#1 Center
Tough
Young
Overshadowed by Crosby and Malkin
Something the team needs

Was thinking of something based around Staal for Drew Staff-Infection

The Penguins don't need to trade Staal for a winger. Malkin is back to great form with Neal and Sullivan. Crosby was in the midst of the most dominate season in the post lockout NHL with Kunitz and Dupuis prior to his concussion.

Staal finally seems to have made the next step offensively to the point where 30 goals and 60 points looks possible this year. He wont be traded.

I doubt Pittsburgh is too worried about the "oh no we have too many good centres" situation

The Pens' biggest strength (when everyone is healthy) is their strength down the middle. Being able to throw out Crosby, Malkin, and Staal for 90% of the game means they've got a legitimate threat on the ice almost every shift of the game. If they dealt Staal, then suddenly they'd be throwing out Jeffrey, Park, Adams or Vitale in Staal's place, which suddenly takes away the pressure having to face three good center has on the opposition.

So I don't see why the Pens would have any incentive to deal Staal, at least not unless the return was so high they couldn't turn it down (ie. a Bobby Ryan, Corey Perry, signed Zach Parise, etc.). I don't think Drew Stafford is in that level of elite winger to justify giving up Jordan Staal for. And basically an elite (not just good, but elite) winger is the only conceivable reason I'd see for the Pens breaking up their three center model.

Penguins keep Staal. Their Center depth when healthy is sick.

Vanek

He's the only Buffalo player I would touch.

I don't think Vanek fits very well in the Pens cap structure though.

For Vanek, you'll have to offer up something better than Staal.

As it was said previously in this thread, this trade will not happen.

Ray Shero and the Penguins LOVE the 3 center model that have ran and proved how important it is to have 3 superstar quality centers.

Staal, Sid, Geno aren't going anywhere.

If Sid is finished then Staals value to the Pens increases 10 fold. Pens need to keep Staal until someone hits Crosby hard a couple times.

1. That's their playoff matchup advantage, so I don't see them sacrificing it.

2. Given questions about Sid's health and that Geno, while recovered, still is coming off a significant knee injury, Staal is more than simply a roster luxury.

3. The day may come that Shero moves Staal and/or Malkin. It will be for cap reasons or because the player requests a trade or because he is bowled over with a lopsided offer, period.

Unless the Sabres where willing to part with Derek Roy I doubt that Pittsburgh would trade Jordan Staal. As others have said the 3 centre model is a good one for Pittsburgh, they're not going to part with that unless they get a good centre back.

Staal is just way too valuable to the Pens. He was absolutely key in their cup run, and brings an edge and defensive play that are just tough to find in forwards these days.

Jordan Stall is an untouchable in Pittsburgh and therefore unavailable in just about any trade.

I honestly think that the analogy for they myriad Staal threads is watching a MTV video and saying that it is not fair that the guy in the video gets to nail all those hot chicks when all you can get is the fat chick next door.

Yes center is at a premium on the NHL and two thirds of the teams in the NHL are looking for even one decent one. Does not mean that the Pens are going to give up a hot chick just because they have two others. Real life does not work that way.

I am not a pens fan, but even I realize that trading Staal would fundamentally alter the way the team is built.

3 good centers deep is never a problem. Staal provides elite defense from the forward position, the guys who are his peers in that respect are Datsyuk, Kesler, Bergeron and a couple more, none of who are coming to Pittsburgh to replace Staal.

To alter the way a team is built is going to take a lot more than what that player is worth, we are talking about a team that has won a cup and is arguably better now than what it was then if and when Crosby returns.

I highly doubt Staal is traded unless it is in a deal they just can't refuse and this proposal isn't it.

They could offer Derek Roy and Staal would still be safe in Pittsburgh IMO.

BUF doesn't have the assets to get Staal from Shero.

If the Sabres were to get Staal, it would be to add to their center depth, not swap it.

Plus, given Roy's greater offensive production, don't think the Sabres would part with him for Staal. Roy's been a strong PKer on one of the best PKer on one of the best PK units in the league and Ruff prefers to roll forward lines as opposed to defensive line matching (at least in the regular season, on occasion he might in the playoffs), so getting Staal to create a shutdown line wouldn't be as big a benefit with Ruff behind the bench.

Jordan enters top ten in goals with 9 as of tonight. 65 games left, he definately seems poised to blow those 22 to 23 goals a game he has been averaging per year out of the water this year. Should end up in the range of 30. That would put him on an entirely other plateau as far as players go when combined with the other facets of his game.

I can't see the Pens moving Staal right now. He's playing the best hockey of his career, imo, and he's great insurance as a top 2 line caliber center if Crosby or Malkin have any setbacks with their injuries.
