Of course, so let them go a decade without football. Shut the program right down, and maybe after a few years, these types of people will disappear. There would be a huge outcry, but eventually as years went by with no football and the NCAA refused to relent on the punishment, the message would get across to these nutjobs.

I think that shaming them over the fact they cry over a few football sanctions (that won't even last as long as many of them will attend the school) but not over the **** of other students and children at the hands of predators that were allowed to do this unchecked would be the best route.

Don't punish them anymore, just shame them and their school over their incredible and sickening audacity.

You might as well shut down the university.

Fans are going to be idiotic no matter how stiff the penalties are.

If tens of thousands of people are going to decline getting an education there over the fact that there's no football team playing, then so be it I guess. The college itself has apparently fostered a culture of ass-backward priorities.

I agree, but why give them an audience? Allowing them to continue playing football every Saturday just gives thousands of morons the opportunity to make a martyr out of Paterno and play the role of victims. If there's no football being played, there's really no stage left for these asshats.

I find it ironic that Redd is going from a program who just got a bowl ban, to one just came out of one.

Screw you, Redd.

Bolden doesn't even warrent a shrug, though.

Paterno family lawyer is named Wick. Who names their kid "Wick"? Not talking the sexual allegory, just the pomposity.
I thought he ran the Susan Biddle Ross Foundation?

The family wants the sanctions appealed. No mention of the victims, naturally. All about the program, legacy, blah blah.

Not sure if I should be mortified at the Paterno family for not being able to accept that JoePa wasn't the saint he led on to be, or give them a pass because they're completely unaware of reality since the bubble popped.

Jay Paterno was a PSU assistant coach throughout all of this, from the first case through the rhythmic slapping episode all the way to the end. It's doubtful that he had *no* inkling of what was happening. So at least one family member is in my mind just continuing the legacy of hypocrisy and villainry that characterizes the Paterno regime.

Penn State's appealing, so now I hope that the NCAA does some digging of their own and finds even more dirt from that trash heap and levies even greater punishments against their organization for wasting everybody's time.

I thought the handshake deal was "If you don't appeal, this is what you get as opposed to the 3 or 4 year death penalty we could have given you." I'm surprised the NCAA hasn't already jumped for that. Penn State broke their promise, and thus have to be punished further.

Basically, that seems to be what the NCAA and Penn State's president agreed to, but the university's board of trustees said, "Nuh-uh, you don't have that power."

Like I said, honestly hope this blows up in their face in a huge way.

good for them, the ncaa overstepped their boundaries on the sanctions...they didn't even follow their own rules in investigating. Legally penn state has a shot of winning if it gets to federal court.

If you have netflix, Pony Excess is online. It's about SMU's death penalty teams and lends some perspective on the NCAA sanctions and player free agency.

Uh.... not really. If the NCAA wanted to, they could ban Penn State for the color of their uniforms. They're not a governmental agency and there's no expectation of due process. If there were, then the NCAA couldn't infringe upon university free speech rights by banning Native American imagery in their mascots and logos. The NCAA is, for all intents and purposes, still considered a voluntary association and Penn State doesn't have to compete in the NCAA if they don't want to. Obviously, they'd never voluntarily drop out as they'd lose hundreds of millions of dollars per decade, but that's the way the law would look at it.

If anything, this could force the NCAA to actually investigate things and potentially even lay down harsher penalties, especially if they find more dirt. So in the long run it could very well be worse for Penn State. Not to mention that it helps keep the initial story alive, essentially meaning even more bad press on a daily basis for the university.

Speaking of uniforms...Penn State for the first time is putting names on the jerseys and a blue ribbon recognizing the victims. I hope the ribbon is a permanent thing.
