Leafs have contacted goalie Marty Turco

"sportsnetbroph
Mike Brophy
The Toronto Maple Leafs have made contact with veteran goalie Marty Turco. He has been working out with the Soo Greyhounds."

Obviously not a long term commitment, if this were to happen it would be to have a veteran presence on the bench again. I figure the leafs want scrivens starting games and not spending time as a back up in the NHL.

What does this say for gustaavson? Waivers? Trade? Not overly thrilled but, i do believe he is better then gustaavson.

It means that either Gustavsson is gone or the Reimer injury is a long term issue.

It's probably the latter.

They needed to do something as the "monster" wasn't scary and Scrivens is not ready yet.

Hopefully Turco works out for them while Reimer recovers.

Turco used to be 1 of the top goalies not too long ago, maybe he's gone down..... a lot recently, but he can't be worst than Gust, I honestly **** myself every time the other team even ices it and it goes remotely close to Gustavson

The team plays with 0 faith in front of Gustavsson, so a change up could be needed if Reimer is out long-term.

He's certainly not the ideal stop-gap, but a veteran was needed in the summer (IMO) before any of this happened.

In regards to acquiring a vet in the summer, Burke said something along the lines of not worrying about the position because the market was full of capable backups to acquire... interesting to see them now push the panic button (if the rumour is true).

You never know, look at Khabibulin. Maybe Turco rededicated himself in the offseason and fixed some of his issues to some degree. One thing I will say is that I have very little confidence in Turco but I'd feel a little better with him in net than Gustavsson.

It'd be nice to have a goalie that knew how to play the puck

Turco would be a nice addition. His puck handling skills will be needed, as nobody in the leafs orginazation knows how to.

Unless Turco can pull off a miraculous return to something even resembling his old form, this is a bad idea.
Turco has been absolutely BRUTAL the last couple years.

The Leafs would be much better off dealing for an experienced backup.
I'm sure Clemmensen could be had for fairly cheap from FLA with Theodore & Markstrom playing well.
He could split time with Scrivens until Reimer comes back, then be backup with Scrivens back starting for the Marlies.

(Gus is done in this town. He may still have a future in the NHL, just not in TO. Ship him out for whatever you can get... a 6th or 7th probably?)

I agree, but might be a nice veteran presence for Scrivens (and Reimer depending on what they would do when/if he returns).

I would feel much more comfortable with Turco as the backup instead of Gustavsson. The team's confidence in Gustavsson is gone - you can see it clearly in their play. Even if Turco's abilities are diminished, the team's less likely to be as tentative and tight with him around.

At worst, I see him as a solid locker room guy, and a pretty good vet to have around, considering that Toronto's one of the youngest teams in the league.

And if Turco really doesn't work out, the team hasn't really committed any assets at all, besides cash (which they have plenty of).

Turco seems like a really good guy in the room too. I can't see it hurting, particularly considering Gus' awful play.

"Proteautype Adam Proteau
If Marty Turco is interested in playing in Toronto, this is great news for the 2002-03 Maple Leafs."
