True, although a better pass to Gaborik and we win that game on the 2 on 1 that ended up with him getting called for a high sticking penalty, and ultimately the Isles 2nd goal.
The way I saw it I thought this one was on Gaborik.
Eh, it was a tough pass to one time, it was almost in his skates and he had to contort himself to get off the shot. still coulda done it but it wasn't a gimme

Definitely not on Gaborik that one. The pass was too far in front of him and he was reached out as far as he could to get to it so he couldnt aim the shot where he wanted to.
if last night was any indication of their general level of play, the isles have some serious problems on defense
Pretty much. I said it in a thread in the preseason when Staios was penciled in on the first pair with Streit. I got jumped on for it. It's pretty amusing at this point watching 3 #6 d-men getting the amount of time they do. Mottau, Staios, and Eaton have been brutal this year and unfortunately it looks like it's rubbing off on Jurcina. If the Isles picked two completely average youngish d-men during the offseason they would be in much better shape. That five million went to Rolston though, money well spent.
I voted Lundqvist. The guy is a pleasure to watch.
I love how every time we have an extended 5 on 3, you'll see numerous posts saying how improved our power play looks.
Color me not impressed about being able to move the puck and get good shots while on a 5 on 3. Gaborik has to get off the point. His shot is a one trick pony and it hasn't fooled a goalie in 2 years outside of Gustavson. Anyone remember the goal Kovy scored against us in the preseason? That was a lethal shot. Gaborik does not possess a lethal shot. On a 5 on 3 its all about those guys up top being threats to bury it if you give them an inch.

I beg to differ about the pp. I think we've moved the puck nicely and just have a hard time finishing.
One of the reasons why we have a hard time finishing is - for some reason - this team has never heard of a one-timer before. I swear we NEVER shoot one-timers and that is one thing that frustrates the hell out of me.

they try to get them but our passing is brutal
i remember at least 4 times last night where a pass was clearly inteded to be a one timer but the pass was just off enough that the shooter had to adjust his body position
we have a bad habit of passing behind guys and not leading them

I agree that by and large our PP is improved.
All I'm saying is its bizarre to give a 5 on 3 praise for moving the puck and getting quality chances. Why don't we start praising our shootout guys for getting open looks.

They don't. If you take a great PP like Montreal, you'll see that's all they do. Subban is lining up for the one timer to entire PP. The lack of one timers and lhow they hold on to the puck instead of getting quick shots kills them.
I personally thought the 5 on 3 was fine last night. They got the chances but just couldn't bury it. If Richie's shot is a couple of inches the other way, everyone's praising the PP.

Agreed. The pass wasnt good enough. If that was Stepan making the pass, it's likely a goal.
1. Hank- saved the bacon in 2nd period
2. Richards- wow what a beautiful slapshot, looked like Rod Gilbert
3. Captain Calli- Goal and assist, gives 110% on every shift, relentless forechecker, penalty killer, body checker, shot blocker, Mess would be proud of this Captain
I think Richards' no-look pass to Girardi was the best pass of the season. I don't think people realize how hard that is, to completely look off a goalie and put a pass right on the tape of a streaking Girardi for an open-netter. It's like a QB looking off the defense, but instead of looking back at the receiver before the throw, firing it right on the money using only peripheral vision. Cally's pass was awesome, but the ice awareness of Richards is amazing.
Richards is not a flashy player, but man does he make good decisions.

Yes that was great also.
With Cally he covered so much ice with that pass thats why it gets my vote. It was also mostly no look.
