Leafs offered 2nd+player for Franson

DarrenDreger Darren Dreger
Leafs offered a player and 2nd round pick from undisclosed team for Franson. Evidently, depth on D is highly valued in Toronto.

Who was it?

Paul Holmgren hates 2nd round picks.

Shelley is technically a player, right?

Can't imagine they would offer that for Franson--that pick will almost certainly be between 30-40, and Comeau has decent value.

If they did, and BB turned it down, he's nuts. You could easily flip either the 2nd or Comeau and get a decent depth defenseman while holding on to the other asset.

Ideally Brassard + 2nd

Realistically Cap dump + late 2nd

I would have done that deal in a heartbeat.

Regardless of who the player is that is included in the package the 2nd Rd Pick makes the deal.

That would give us the ability to add a top 60 player in a deep draft, or move it for another player in the offseason (for the record we got Liles for a 2nd this year)

Hard to believe, I'm sure Burke would have already accepted the deal if it was true

The unnamed team was nuts to offer that for Franson, and Toronto nuts to refuse (regardless of the player offered) if true.

not really. Burkie values defensive depth, a lot.

i remember a rags fan saying Franson wasn't worth more than a 3rd rd pick. hilarious.

Yeah, Garth probably turned it down because of the 2nd round pick. He just can't get enough of those.

What is so speical about Franson? I mean he looks like a different playe ron Leafs team.

I wonder how Franson feels now that Burke made it public.

I find this hard to believe, I'd take this deal and run. We have some guys on the farm who could fill in that role, the guy who sits in the press box, just fine. Holzer could easily replace the non-existent Franson.

I agree 100% with this, if the offer was really sent to the TML.

Burke is on the fan590 right now

a) he doesn't want to trade Franson unless he gets blown away - this trade isn't it
b) he's looking out which goalies are available and has talked to reimer about it
c) he's not interested in turco

Is anyone even entertaining the thought that the "player" is either a salary dump or someone Toronto has no interest in having on their team one way or another?

Everyone hears "a 2nd + a player" and thinks wow, great! Two assets! Not always the case...

Burke isn't stupid. If the player coming this way was a salary dump and he doesn't have much cap room it would be very costly fitting him into the lineup, assuming he was good enough to crack the lineup.

Definitely not the Islanders, Snow doesn't trade NHL'ers for NHL'ers.

Gomez plus a 2nd? Hard to say. But if it was a dump that explains a lot.

As a Leafs fan I don't really care who the player is, the second rounder is fine with me. It would be pretty hard to dump a player on us with such little cap room.

He's going to need to at some point if he ever wants to take the next step.

Gauthier isn't smart enough to include Gomez, he just gives away 2nd's for rental's
