What Do the Rangers Have to Do For a Front Cover on the Newspaper?
Seriously. Also, by front page, I am referring to the back cover (sports fans read the back of the paper first, so the back is the cover). So what do they have to do? They won six in a row and we still don't have a cover. What the hell? I know hockey isn't that popular here, but basketball isn't either and they get covers.

It won't be during the regular season unless they set some record for consecutive games won. NBA lockout, NFL season, MLB free agency followed up by spring training all take priority. If the Rangers make the playoffs, expect covers starting in the first round.
Well by the time the playoffs start, baseball will be back. Right now, there's no other sport besides football and that's only now three days a week. We have had plenty of opportunities to get on, so why haven't we?

I also love when other fans claim x player wants to play in a big hockey market like New York. With all the actors, musicians, Yankees, and Knicks a hockey player could hide better here than in a small market.

During football season, all the papers care about is that. And football won't be done until January or Feburary and by that time, it's spring training.
The reason why you see them come playoff time is everyone jumps on the bandwagon. All of a sudden everyone's a hockey fan so that's why they get the media attention.

It is. Last year I think they got the cover for only one game, maybe two. The Knicks being in the playoffs took away a lot of the coverage as well.
First year after the lockout when they made the playoffs they got every cover and the year after against Atlanta and Buffalo they got a lot of covers as well.

I think it's one of the things that makes it attractive to play in New York. You can be a big star and get all the amenities of living in this city without people really hounding you everywhere you go. Honestly, I bet it's very easy for Marian Gaborik to walk around in the city and not be noticed.
Cablevision owns Newsday so one could argue that's their best chance.
I remember Valiquette shut out the Maple Leafs 1-0 a few years back (possibly 2008) in a very early season game on a Friday night and I joked with my friend that this story will be buried in the sports pages and the next morning l was shocked to see a full cover picture and the headline story of the game in Newsday. That might be one of the last times that a Rangers game that did not have significant meaning made the cover.
Newsday is owned by Cablevision, so I doubt they favor the Islanders more than the Rangers.
So what? Newsday has always been a Long Island paper--just look at its circulation numbers. Plus, Cablevision has a lot of money tied up in the Islander team (they have the cable rights after all), so it's in their interest to keep things the way they always have been--emphasis on the Islanders.
It's dumb. Hockey is very big and popular in NY (more people watch NHL than NBA games in NY if you sum Rangers+Devs+Isles ratings).
Basketball isn't even that big, nobody talked Knicks on WFAN till last winter, they would talk about the Mets of all things!
I don't get it, to me it is dumb. Boston got back pages and they have to compete with the Celtics/Pats/Red Sox.
The Flyers get back pages, the Caps get back pages, and I'll tell NY is every bit and more the hockey town they are.
I just don't get NY media.
Well that won't really be a good way to do it since plenty of fans of one of the three hockey teams will watch one of the other two if their team isn't playing, so you are pretty much counting plenty of people twice.
Now this isn't a thread to argue about which sport/team is more popular.
From what I can tell, the Times even stopped writing articles about the Rangers. I remember like a week back, we played, and no article for us. The article was about the Pens game. Do they think there's more Pens fans than Rangers fans in NYC?
Well it's tpp late now but if Hank had married Lady Gaga we'd be on the FRONT cover.
Yeah, but then you are getting into AROD tabloid territory and that is somewhere I'd rather not go. If they aren't going to write about them for hockey I'd rather get no coverage.
