SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse University associate head basketball coach Bernie Fine was fired Sunday in the wake of an investigation of child molestation allegations against him.

"At the direction of Chancellor Cantor, Bernie Fine's employment with Syracuse University has been terminated, effective immediately," Kevin Quinn, the school's senior vice president for public affairs, said in a statement.

The 65-year-old Fine was in his 36th season at his alma mater. He had the longest active streak of consecutive seasons at one school among assistant coaches in Division I.

Fine's firing comes in the wake of new revelations Sunday, including a third accuser. Fine had been placed on paid administrative leave when the accusations were first made public.

Two former Syracuse ball boys were the first to accuse Fine, who has called the allegations "patently false."

Zach Tomaselli, 23, of Lewiston, Maine, said Sunday that he told police that Fine molested him in 2002 in a Pittsburgh hotel room. He said Fine touched him "multiple" times in that one incident.

Tomaselli, who faces sexual assault charges in Maine involving a 14-year-old boy, said during a telephone interview with The Associated Press that he signed an affidavit accusing Fine following a meeting with Syracuse police last week in Albany.

Tomaselli's father, meanwhile, maintains his son is lying.

Bizarre as hell. So one of the "victims" has his own issues in this area. The victims father says the son is lying? Why? Doesn't want the chaos that would come if it WERE TRUE?

Something tells me this mess mirrors to a degree the Duke Mens Lacross case. If Syracuse was smart in this case, they would wait till they have something solid to fire him and learn from Duke University's mistake.

I think the fact is different here though. Those were students, he's a coach. They were reinstated. This scandal is hot with what went down in Penn State. Now you have his OWN WIFE admitting her husband has issues. I might agree with you had neither of those things happened. Once that report came out about her the choice was all but made up.

Based on what we know right now, I don't believe Syracuse should fire Jim Boeheim. Nor do I expect them to. But this a fast moving story.

Statement from Chancellor Cantor:

Quote:
Statement from Chancellor Cantor

Dear Students, Faculty, & Staff:

Tonight, in the wake of troubling new allegations that emerged in the media today, I am writing to let you know that Bernie Fine’s employment at the University has been terminated effective immediately.
...
Frankly, the events of the past week have shaken us all. The taped phone call that ESPN revealed today was not provided to the university by Mr. Davis during the 2005 investigation by our legal counsel. Like the media review of the case a few years earlier, no other witnesses came forward during the university investigation, and those who felt they knew Bernie best could not imagine what has unfolded.

Since I last wrote to you, we have been cooperating fully with the authorities. On Friday, November 18th, as the District Attorney has noted, we turned over to his office the results of our 2005 months-long investigation. Also on November 18, our Board of Trustees retained an independent law firm, Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP, to review our procedures in responding to the initial allegations when they first came to the University’s attention. I fully supported that decision and it is vital that we examine our protocols and actions in dealing with such serious allegations. We need to learn all we can from this terrible lesson.

All of us have the responsibility, individually and collectively, to ensure that Syracuse University remains a safe place for every campus community member and everyone with whom we interact on a daily basis on campus or in the community as part of our learning, scholarship, or work. We do not tolerate abuse. If anything good comes out of this tragedy, it will be that this basic principle is reinforced.

Sincerely,

Nancy Cantor

The wife of former Syracuse University assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine will make a statement Tuesday challenging the implications of a tape recording of a 2002 telephone conversation with her husband's accuser that appears to show she knew of alleged sexual abuse of boys, her nephew said Monday.

"She'll even say that's her voice," nephew Matt Govendo said, but that the sections of the tape -- excerpts of which were made public Sunday by the Syracuse-based Post-Standard newspaper and ESPN -- "are all tampered with."

Well, I thought the whole story was kind of whacked, but more of it is true than I would have guessed. Good to see that Laurie Fine was also sexing up the molested child. In the tape she never says he molested minors though - loosely implied I guess - but it could turn out he was just a homosexual and she was banging the basketball team.

What a story.

I'm honestly surprised Boeheim is still in a job, IMO, he would have been out immediately after the "Penn State" comments. Joking about such a serious thing as sexual abuse is no laughing matter.

Prosecutor says no state charges since Statue of limitations have run out but says the accusations are "creditable".
http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/12/07...e-allegations/

Quote:
A New York prosecutor says he cannot bring charges against a former Syracuse University assistant basketball coach but find that two men who accused him of sexual abuse are credible.
A federal probe is ongoing into the accusations against fired coach Bernie Fine, but Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick says he won't pursue a state case.

Boeheim isn't going anywhere.

Syracuse #1 in the nation!

And this story is just too fishy.

#1 because they haven't left the state of NY as usual and they have played one decent opponent. Hip hip hooray.

He isn't going to be fired because he's #1? Why the hell should that matter?
