And the assistant Pearn was fired at 6:00 p.m. on the Flyers' first trip.

We shall see if it turns their season around soon enough. Their team this year just doesn't jump out at me. They seem to have pretty mediocre group, outside of Price.

Rumor I saw was that the last straw was he benched Leblanc for the rest of the game right after he scored his first NHL goal for some minor rookie mistake that didn't matter.

Wouldn't that be the biggest troll switch. Trade Mike Richards and acquire PK Subban months later.

Don't see it happening at all though

The Kings have apparently hired Darryl Sutter as their new head coach.

Did McCabe retire? Or is it too late to sign him?

Quote:
A big story is developing in Sweden, and it involves our beloved Foppa, Peter Forsberg.

As part of a forthcoming documentary “#21 Peter Forsberg”, he admitted that in the 2006 Olympics in Turin, the Swedes kind of, well, maybe tanked a game against Slovakia to have an easier road from there to the gold medal.

A loss to Slovakia in the preliminary round, and Sweden would have drawn Switzerland in the quarterfinals. So, the heavily favored Swedes lost 3-0 to the Slovaks, and thus avoided having to play Canada or Russia earlier. As it turned out, the Swedes beat the Swiss, the Czechs and the Finns to win the gold medal. Russia played Canada in the quarterfinals, with the Russian winning. Sweden beat Switzerland 6-2.

The following is a google translation of an article up now on the Swedish newspaper site, Expressen.

Pretty interesting stuff. I don't know offhand if that's necessarily a punishable offense by the IOC or just a strategic move. Not exactly in the spirit of the Olympics though.

Anyone who has paid attention to those short tournaments know that it's more about winning the right games, not necessarily all of them. Sweden got to play Switzerland (after they had upset Canada) while Slovakia was stuck with the Czechs, I believe. In the previous World Cup, the Czechs tried similar shenanigans, but claimed that they were just making sure all of their players got to play.

It's more a case of not going a 100% than trying to lose the game.
It was very, very obvious at the time of the Olympics that Sweden probably wouldn't win that game, yet no one said it out loud except for a bunch of journalists.

Is there anything wrong with losing a game to get an easier road?

http://www.arcticicehockey.com/2011/...power-rankings

Gabe Desjardins posted this this morning about Fenwick-Close Rankings. A bit surprised to see the Flyers 17th (down 5 spots from this time last year), and have the 3rd highest PDO, despite Bryzgalov's early season struggles. Only teams higher are the Sabres and Wild (anyone who reads the site knows that these guys HATE the Wild this season and are basically waiting - rightfully - for the bottom to fall out). With players leaving the lineup, and no Pronger at all, it might start to get dicey.

And this is how Alice in Wonderland it is to live in Quebec (from TSN):

Quote:
QUEBEC GOVERNMENT UPSET BY HABS' COACH HIRING
The Quebec government has weighed in on the hiring of a Montreal Canadiens coach who can't speak French -- and it isn't pleased.

The province's culture minister says she expects the Habs to correct the situation.

Christine St-Pierre isn't quite calling for the firing of new coach Randy Cunneyworth, who was just hired on the weekend.

But she says the Habs have given the impression his hiring is temporary, and she takes them at their word.

The former NHL forward has been given the unique title of interim coach, through the end of the season.

The hiring has created a frenzy of media reaction, including calls for a boycott of products associated with the Montreal Canadiens.

But judging from the reaction on social-networking sites, the response of regular Montreal fans may be slightly less critical.

Lucic was handed a 1-game ban for the hit on Rinaldo. I'm guessing he gets it because he's been so, so close to being suspended in the past. I thought the 5 minute major was too excessive. It was a penalty for sure, but nothing too severe.

I liked that Rinaldo downplayed the incident afterwards as well. He's starting to really grow on me. If he continues to keep his cool during the games, his reputation calls should drop off as well.

Yeah, exactly. It's awesome that he didn't whine about it like, unfortunately, some of the other players on our team would (and have last year). And if there's one thing I really envy the Bruins is it's how tough and mean they are, so I'm hoping our attitude will converge towards that, as well.

Time to go read the Montreal forum. If my calculations are correct, it should be in full meltdown mode.

Yeah, I think I'm becoming a Rinaldo fan.

Former Flyer Watch: Jeff Carter

I figured we could discuss all things Carter here. I still like the guy, and am glad he's starting to produce in Columbus. He's not doing spectacular, and Columbus probably expected more, but hopefully he finds some chemistry with Nash. I haven't being really paying too much attention to Columbus, apart from watching the highlights, but the wrist shot is still there.
