In retrospect, who should we have drafted...

I've long been vocal that my pick for the Rangers in the 2008 draft would have been John Carlson.

It's been a few years now. So, what do ya think?

Stats:

MDZ: GP:146 G:13 A:41 P:54 +/-: -18

John Carlson: GP:125 G:12 A:43 P:55 +/-: 38

Similar numbers, except for Carlsons +/- which is worlds better, but much of that is a function of a) Carlson playing on a much better team with far more offensive ability, and b)MDZ being just awful in his own zone the previous 2 years...

This year Carlson is a +6, MDZ is a +7

So, who would you have drafted?

Personally, I'm going to change my mind and say MDZ. I think his vision is incredible, and he's only going to get better.

I was one of the people that wanted Carlson that year and was mad we passed on him.

Both are good players but Del Zotto's plus/minus kills him cause he was bad on D past 2 years but this year he has improved in that area.

Del Zotto def has the most potential of the two but right now I give Carlson the nod.

thank goodness. i thought there would be another mention of you know who. it's too early for me to say. I'm ok with MDZ. He's still... what? 21? a late 21 too. I don't think we'll see the real MDZ till he's 24.

The Rangers are the forerunners and the forefathers of ****ing up 1st round draft picks. This is nothing new.

Fine with MDZ, it's not as if he was a bad pick. You can't strike gold with every pick.

Personally, for 2010, I didn't even want Fowler as my first choice...I was waiting for Tarasenko's name to be called. We'll see, but we could use the offensive skill.

I've been quite impressed with Del Zotto this year. He looks very solid on defense. We drafted him to be an offensive guy, but he is still only what...20 years old. We've seen flashes of it, and I think his game will get better with time.

I was also hoping this wasn't going to be a Cam Fowler thread, as well.

i was all over him last year.

this year though he's eating up 2nd pairing minutes, and looking ok to sometimes good offensively.

he seems to be "getting it".

just hope he keeps rolling like that

MDZ looks great this year. I'm fine with him over Carlson. He's really stepped up defensively this year, and he looks involved offensively. Just needs to shoot more.

Also I too was a Tarasenko fan.

Put me in the Carlson corner.

DZ has his moments, but plays like garbage most of the time.

As soon as staal comes back and we can limit MDZ's minutes a little bit more and get him on the powerplay consistently, He'll come into his own and play like the hockey player he can be. He has looked good this year most of the time. IMO a little less minutes and a little more watching and mentoring and he'll be a great hockey player. He seems to be fairing well with all the minutes though. Who knows what can happen. But i take MDZ, His offense has a lot more improvement left in it.

Del Zotto has been the least of our concerns to date. I'm still anti-McIlrath, I hated that pick from day one and always will. The Rangers made a huge mistake passing on Kuznetsov or Tarasenko.

Plus now, where does McIlrath fit in on our future defense?

Staal-McDonagh
Erixon-Girardi
Del Zotto-Sauer

I understand that we could easily package Girardi or Sauer for a top line forward, and hindsight is 20/20 regarding the Erixon trade, but I think a forward was much more important at the time and still is today. We could use all the secondary scoring we can get. Every time I watch McIlrath, I feel like he's not worthy of a top 10 pick.

Pro McIlrath, that kid is going to be a crease clearing beast! He just needs to pick up his defensive play a little bit more, thought it was good for him to be with the team the extended period of time in the preseason.

i know im not alone on this but im truly really happy we have MDZ on our team and we have held on to him, (who knows what gets brought up in talks) its pretty obvious he displayed some very high playmaking abilities within the first 3 months of the nhl as a 19 year old. when he hits his ceiling and reaches his full potential. we are gonna have one hell of a defenseman. out of all our young guys the most id try to keep through hell and fire would be MDZ,McD,Stepan and Chris Kreider.

I don't think you could really have gone wrong with either player.

Yup. I really took a stand.

He had an excellent rookie season, a crappy sophomore campaign, and is off to a very good start this year. How does that equate to "awful most of the time?"

Why do you have to bring up Fowler in this thread. We are talking about the year 2008 not 2010. Why must every thread about possible draft switch positions turn into a We missed Fowler, or fowler this, fowler that. Whether you are in agreance on passing him by or thinking we should have picked him.

Cam is NOT Crosby. Lets let it go already and move on. Sheesh

"very good" is a subjective term. He pinches at the wrong time, and can't skate fast enough to make up for it.

He also doesn't make up for his problems in the d-zone enough.

John Carlson is a much better defenseman and more gifted offensively than MDZ. He plays on the 1st pairing with Alzner. He definitely should have been our pick in the 08 draft and if not him, then Tyler Ennis.

You got that right. Stevie Wonder could have made better picks than we have in the draft, especially in the 1st round.

Carlson plays with AO, Backstrom, Semin, etc. MDZ hasn't had that luxury in his career. Carlson undoubtedly has the better shot, but his vision, meh, id call it average at best. MDZ has outstanding vision, significantly better than Carlson IMHO.

Carlson is better defensively though, id definitely agree there. but MDZ has been much improved this season as well. he's actually been an above average defenseman in his own zone this year... which i think is his primary focus at the moment. get his own zone straightened out, then start adding the offense back into his game.
