Can Leafs start printing playoff tickets? Past history says, Yes

http://www.thestar.com/sports/leafs/...story-says-yes

Quote:
The good news is the Maple Leafs find themselves in a playoff spot on U.S. Thanksgiving. That means statistically speaking a playoff spot is likely this year.

A hot start has put the Maple Leafs in fifth place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 12-8-2 for 26 points, putting them in good position to make it to the post-season for the first time since 2004.

A study by the Star going back to 1993 shows teams in a playoff spot by U.S. Thanksgiving have an easier time actually making the postseason.

This is where message board posters > media.

Looking at the standings without considering games played is silly.

Be careful about having too much confidence. It's still early in the season and anything can happen. It seems like the team has a very good chance of making the playoffs, but you can never be too certain at this point.

A few injuries to the forwards or defense will cause problems, especially during the stretch drive in February and March.

Or the fact that the discrepancy in the East sits at 8 points separating 1st from 14th. There is very little margin for error.

Going back to 1993? You didn't have the same kind of parity, you didn't have the extra point, it's simply a very poor comparison.

Just like last year with these "the Leafs have 2.1%" chance blah blah blah, I don't put any stock in the odds just YET.

Two weeks ago we were 11 points clear of Boston too.... what did the stats say about that probability?

We've already got injuries to Reimer (our starter), Komisarek (key defenseman), Lombardi, Armstrong (physical 3rd liner who really takes Boston off their game), and Grabovski (our second line center).

I do believe we will make the play-offs this year, it remains to be seen just how far we will go however but the team is starting to play good hockey, our PP and PK have improved dramatically and unless there's a total collapse, we should be there.

Once you get to the post season, you never know just how far you can go.

Not to mention in 1993 there were less teams in the league which would obv increase chances. Although last year 7/8 teams that were in playoff spots at this time made it in our conference (ottawa the only one that didn't). 20 games is a decent sample size. I think we have a good chance at the playoffs.

They might or might not make it, but I can't deny that this year has been an improvement over last year so far. The team is on the right path at the moment.

Really if you think about it, we went from very few prospects and Stajan (bless his effort) on the first line to a place where we're a couple additions away from being pretty competitive.

However, is it not likely that there were GP discrepancies in ALL the years? Do we have some evidence that the teams that drop out of playoff contention is correlative with the teams who have played the most games?

Though it looks like the Bozak/Stajan comparisons - from a production perspective - were about right.

Yeah, because what the media prints has a bearing on what will happen on the ice. Do you knock on wood for luck, too?

Might be right, if Kessel and Lupul were there producing with Stajan he might still be here.
