just a thought. since wilson was a left wing lock kind of guy replaced by....well...ive purged cassidy from my memory....hanlon was a defense first guy. now hunter. defense first. boudreau when no longer coaching what he wanted to coach was defense first.

could it be that MCPHEE is the defense first influence and the worst thing possible for this franchise was the breakdown of boudreau's control of the program?

McPhee as defensive mastermind eh? I don't think I can name five above average defensive players that McPhee has acquired. That number drops to 1 if draft picks don't count.

Take it fwiw, Eklund this AM "and I wouldn't be shocked if Semin is dealt for an equally big-time forward...".

only person i can think of (that the other team would also do) is Hemsky... which wouldn't make any sense for us.

Carter, but why would CBS trade for a soon-to-be UFA?

i don't buy that either.

when it comes to asking "why would CLS do that?" their fans have the market cornered.

Try a three-way trade.

Semin to Detroit
Carter to Capitals
Det 1st + Cory Emmerton + Col 1st (WSH) + Neuvirth/Holtby to Columbus

Or something like that.

I REALLY hope he stays in Washington. At least until this team can get close to a cup. I LOVE watching him. At times, I feel like I like him more than Ovi (blasphemy, I know.) I've just become a huge fan of the guy, and would like to see him stay here and succeed. I wish he would step up and prove his worth while Backstrom and Green are out, but so far he hasn't done that.

I hate to think about it, but if he doesnt resign this season, he'll be back in Russia. I absolutely cannot see him signing anywhere else in the NHL. I think Ovechkin is a big part of his staying here.

Fair or not, if this team misses the playoffs, I don't think Semin is back. Not that it'll be his fault necessarily, but changes will have to be made and he'll be a part of it.

I would be very surprised if the Caps organization let Semin walk away without getting any return for him.

So Washington gives up Semin, a top draft pick and a top goalie prospect for an albatross contract. Where do we sign?

McPhee is not trading either 1st, unless it's to move up in the top 5 in the draft. The man loves his draft picks, and scouts.
None of the group of 28/52/55/30/71 will be dealt, cause GMGM will not let his drafted players with promise go. If they are, someone big is coming back, and the only ones of the 5 I'd expect to go would be holtby or maybe semin, if we got a lot back.
If anything we'll see minor depth tweaks, and late picks shipped out w/ a prospect for "playoff help". Perrault, Erskine, and maybe even Hendricks could be dealt.
Hopefully DH and the boys squeak into the playoffs, and do some sort of damage, instead of flaming out. the window has pretty much closed, hopefully they realize that, and smash through it come playoff time.
Maybe Ward will pay off if we make it there.

Given how well he's played since Hunter took over, will he be re-signed?

He's the only player on the team that knows anything about offense right now. Needs to be kept.

I think I would be ok with this.

If I were Semin I'd be praying for a trade to hockeytown......I can see him becoming a force next to Pavel.

If he ends up on the wings...we're going to all see him turn into a star.....which of course would suck.....but hey next to Kuz signing a 10 yr deal in the K that would end this hockey season nicely don't ya think?

I know I'm in the minority but I would rather see Ovechkin traded and Semin kept.
