Montreal is a natural rivalry but, on the ice, nothing memorable has happened in quite some time.

We have a lot of playoffs history with Pittsburgh. We won '07, '08 was a dud with all the injuries but '10 was actually a pretty good series. Might have the years wrong but whatever.

To me Boston will be the benchmark. They always seem out of reach and they school us every time we play them. If we turn the tide against them that's when things will start becoming serious.

I'd say Pittsburgh has been our biggest rivalry for the past couple years.

Toronto is now our biggest rivalry again though. They've gotten a better team than they've had in the past couple years. The matches are more intense now than they have been.

I'd say about previous to the half way mark of last year (before we started "rebuilding") are biggest rival was Buffalo. Now I'd say its back to Toronto again and I love it! Both young teams that are starting to understand what the Battle of Ontario is about. I cant wait for the next game, I think we have been better than them in all 3 games this year almost completing an amazing comeback and winning the 2 others after being scored on first. Also things like Phaneuf laying out Da Costa just make you even more fired up to play them. I am starting to hate Toronton again!

1st Toronto - Obvious!
2nd Buffalo - History and for any reason, games seems intense between these two teams
3rd Canadiens - Not a rivalry between the teams but between fans, especially fans living in Gatineau. The emotional IQ of certain Habs fan sometimes gets pathetic. It's often useless to have an argument for something.
4th Pittsburg - By a notch due to recent history
5th Flyers - Playoffs history. We are to Flyers what Leafs means to us in playoffs. For any reason, any game between Flyers and Sens could potentially get out of hand.

Mention to Ducks (07 SCF) and Wings (Comparisons between 2000 and 2008).

I cannot see Ottawa-Boston being a rivalry. I never felt passion between these two team. Often, the games are even boring. I remember many 0-0, 1-1, 1-0 final scores back in Jacques Martin Days.

Pens fan here to check out your GDT and I saw this thread. Surprised you guys think pens are your third rival. I never would have guessed they would be that high especially with Montreal being in the same division.

We faced Ottawa 3 times in 4 years. That counts for something, especially when you're a Pens fan living in O-Town like I am,

Yea I'd say Pittsburgh aswell. And for a while weren't we the only team able to keep Crosby out of the G column?

We've rarely been close to Montreal in the standings and have never played them in the playoffs. Also, they've been quite a soft team since... forever? How can you hate a group of such non-threatening little munchkins? The only animosity we'd have towards the Habs would be because of Habs fans in Ottawa.

Otherwise though, everybody in our division except the Bruins are in our top 5. The Pens makes our top-5 because of all of the recent playoff series. Maybe Philly would round out the top-5; a couple of playoff series, a couple of battles and then acquiring that ********* Pronger.

Beyond that:
LA is an under reported rival, but most of our games against them seem to turn into ****shows pretty quick.
I feel like we've had a weird thing going with Edmonton fans the past few years that I can't quite understand.
New Jersey I can see.
The Ducks? ... Hmm, sort of takes the hate out of it when they move the guys you hated. Heck, I think there are only 3 guys left (Getzlaf, Perry and Selanne) from that Cup winning team.

Wow, we only have 4 guys left from the Cup Finals team. I'm feeling old right now. Was it really that long ago?

Really the only thing that I find funny in this is that we don't have any reason to hate the Bruins (the only divisional team that struggles to make our top-5). The only thing that I can ever remember about the Bruins is that Tim Thomas has owned us forever... even when he wasn't all that great.

I would have to think it's the teams they see most often & likely in there division. Some might consider it's the teams we meet in the playoffs but I don't see much of a rivalry with NJ or Annahiem. Then there are the rivalries with certain players, Avery, Downey, Galleta, Lucic, Orr, etc..

1. Leafs - the fans hate them the most so naturally the players do too
2. Montreal - very obnoxious fans & way too many at SBP
3. Buffalo/Boston - they are good, they are tough & they play us hard

Making the case for Philadelphia. The 02 and 03 playoffs, the massive brawl in 04. I know it seems forever ago, but so are our memorable moments against Toronto.

I dislike (but very much respect) Pittsburgh more than Toronto these days due to the more recent playoff losses. And I guess I'm still a little bitter about what I felt was very biased reffing at the time.

Philly/Boston. Boston because they're in our division...but Philly because we've beaten them twice in the playoffs plus the NHL record in PIM's.
