Re-Tool Trade (Avs)

To:

D - Mark Giordano (28) - $4,020,000 - UFA 2016 <- NMC
W - Rene Bourque (28) - $3,333,333 - UFA 2016 <- Limited NTC
C - Mikael Backlund (22) - $1,270,833 - RFA 2012

To

C - Paul Stastny (25) - $6,600,000 - UFA 2013
D - Ryan Wilson (24) - $1,275,000 - RFA 2012

Avs get a top pairing defenseman, and a solid top six winger, both signed to very nice cap hits through their prime years.

They also get a young talented center with plenty of upside. Backlund will likely develop into a solid two-way #2 center, a perfect fit in behind Duchene who will likely be their #1 for at least the next decade.

Flames get a young talented #1 center who seems to have stagnated over the last couple of seasons in Colorado. A change of scenery might be exactly what is needed for him. He is young enough to be part of a more extensive rebuild should Flames management still decide to go that route.

Flames also get Ryan Wilson back into the fold (traded to COL for Leopold back in '09). A good skating, puck moving d-man. Very similar to Butler IMO, as he's a solid #5 d-man with potential to move up as he develops. Plays a physical brand of hockey, and has some offensive upside.

Flames line-up when healthy:

Tanguay - Stastny - Iginla
Glencross - Jokinen - Comeau
P. Byron - Horak - Stempniak
Kostopo - Moss - Jackman/Stajan/Morrison

Butler - Bouwmeester
Brodie - Hannan
Wilson - Babchuk/Smith/Carson/Sarich

Avs line-up when healthy:

Landeskog - Duchene - Hejduk
D. Jones - C. O'Reilly - Bourque
Meuller - Backlund - Lindstrom
Galiardi - McClement - Kobasew/McLeod/Winnik

Giordano - Johnson
Quincey - Hejda
O'Brien - O'Byrne/Hunwick

Our defense would be beyond brutal after this move. Otherwise I'd love to have Stastny. I just don't think we have the assests to make a trade that will turn this team around anymore.

Gio and Backlund are two players I really don't want to trade unless it's for a lottery pick, Shea Weber or Crosby. We need those guys for the future. Gio is most likely our future captain.

I like Stastny but that's just not worth it.

I could part with Bourque, Backlund and J-Bo... cap permitting.

Yeah, I had a hunch Flames fans would balk at this trade because of Giordano.

However, I have a feeling that defense wouldn't be as weak as some might thing. Some very good mobile PMD's back there who are young and have a lot of upside. Contrary to popular opinion, I think Bouwmeester has been our best d-man this year and he, along with Hannan would anchor it for now. Butler, Brodie and Wilson are all 25 or younger and have great upside as 18-20+ minute d-men in this league IMO.

Stastny is a guy that (again IMO) would find his game again with a change of scenery. He'd have better line mates and a new coach. His numbers have really started to slip with Sacco at the helm, and if he did bounce back he'd be the #1 center in Calgary for many years........even if we did rebuild.

No from a Flames POV. Creates more holes than it fills.

Giordano is a keeper, regardless of situation imo.

Would more Flames fans be receptive to this if it was Bouwmeester instead of Giordano?

For this to work, imo, Colorado has to send back a d-man. Without one of Gio or JBo, our defense is just plain scary.

That'd be way better, but I'm still not liking that Backlund is going. Make it Howse or someone like that and I'd do it.

Then we say hell no. Were not moving Stastny, especially in-division for anything less than a big overpayment.

OPs proposal makes sense, and recognizes we would have to give to get.

Sure it creates holes. They can be filled in the summer.

Exactly.

I figured in this case, you get the rest of the season to really lean on guys like Brodie (21), Carson (25), Smith (27) and Wilson (24). A chance to see what these guys are really capable of at this level. Then you go from there.

So the original proposal, with Giordano, was something you'd consider as an Avs fan? I didn't really think that was an overpayment either, just thought it was pretty close to fair value.

The irony of course is that we let go of Wilson -_-

Yes, I'd probably accept it. No interest in J-Bo though.

Horrible suggestion. Actually, I think this is the worst suggestion I've seen on this board in months. It hurts now and is a killer down the line. I really don't think the OP put much thought into the long term aspects of the deal at all.

The Flames give up two top six forwards and a top pair defenseman, all on very good contracts. They get back a good center, not great, but good, and a bottom pair defenseman who can help out on the PP. The Flames create several holes and only fill one, and that on a temporary basis. Stastny, while a good center, is not a long term solution in Calgary. He's a season and a half away from free agency and would bolt from a rebuilding team as quickly as he can. That leaves the Flames with a defenseman, the type of guy we have in our system already, for three pretty good building blocks. This is not a suggestion for the future, it is a suggestion for now, a season that is all but done. The more I look at this trade suggestion the more it wreaks of desperation in an attempt of getting a guy with some scoring potential at center to see if it will bring Iginla back to life. It makes no sense.

A team obviously in need of a rebuilding and they ship out a couple of 28 years, signed long term, and a 22 year old with some excellent potential, for a couple of 25-26 year olds, one of which is closing on unrestricted free agency. This team needs to dump the 30 somethings and get back a load of 19-22 year olds. That's the age range the Flames need, or it is going to be a very long and painful rebuild. Those players will come only by trading the guys over 35 and getting on with it.
