Do we have any Selke Caliber forwards?

Simple, straightforward question.

Ryan Callahan.

Richards looks like a dominant two-way forward out there this season, too. He's gotten Selke votes before.

I was thinking Anisimov as well, not at consistent as Cally, but makes a huge effort at times when needed

No unless Callahan score 70+ points. It's stupid, but you need to be an offensive star to be considered for the defensive trophy. Makes sense right

Now that he's captain, he will get more consideration

Callahan.

But, I feel Hagelin could one day compete for that. He's a very smart player.

Callahan is right up there with the best defensive players in the league.

Not while Datsyuk, Kesler, and Jordan Staal are still in the league, no.

If Anisimov could take the next step we've all expected him to take for a short while now, he'd be a good candidate. He needs to be more decisive and consistently involved. When he's involved, he's got world class ability.

Callahan could already be a candidate if he has a great year from start to finish. So far so good.

Hagelin maybe one day but hes still pretty green, despite looking outstanding in his first two games.

Dubinsky, definitely not. He's not a good defensive player, positionally at all. He gives good effort and back checks but he's not even close to selke discussion.

I also think Stepan may have a chance at it one day, but I think he's just going to explode as such a great offensive player that he won't even be considered. Gretzky never won the selke either.

Datsyuk is a monster. Kesler and Staal don't put Cally out of the discussion though.

Still. Freakin' Pavel Datsyuk.

Callahan got recognition and votes last year, for the Selke.

Winning it is a different story.

But competing for it, again I believe Callahan will continue to do so and I believe Hagelin's IQ on the ice is at a level where he could eventually get recognition as well. And bu recognition, I mean votes.

While I agree he's our best defensive forward, he's still not in the caliber of Kessler and Datsyuk.

When I think of Selke-caliber forwards, i think of Guy Carbonneau, Steve Kaspar and Federov. Blocking shots is certainly a key aspect of being a defensive forward, but the way you cover and shut down an elite forward (like the three aforementioned did forever), then transitioning to offense is the key aspect. Callahan isnt much of a "checker" like Datsyuk, Lehtinen and Peca were when they were on defense.

Still, Callahan is clearly reliable and should get votes every year. i could see him winning a Selke down the road when he becomes a defense-first forward.

The trophy has changed; I agree with you. When I think of a "defensive" forward, I think of [current] players like Martin Hanzal, Manny Malhotra, Dave Bolland...guys that are primarily used as matchup players. Not glorified "shutdown centers" such as Ryan Kesler. He's one of my favorite players, but his defensive game is HIGHLY overstated. Highly.

Short answer is no. I think Stepan is currently the team's best defensive forward.

I've been watching hockey for 50 years and Datsyuk may be the best defensive forward I've ever seen.

With Pavel Datsyuk and Jordan Staal in the league, we're gonna have a hard time having one of our boys win it.

Stepan (down the road), Cally or Richards (Cally and Rich currently have gotten votes) will garner votes but won't win it.

I've been quite surprised by Richards' defensive play. Dallas fans made him out to be quite the liability.

Then again, his giveaway to takeaway ratio this year is soooo much better than previous years.

Same thing as the Norris Trophy. It pretty much always goes to the best offensive defenseman.

Datsyuk and Kesler are on another level.

Staal, not so much. It's name recognition. He's still a good defensive forward, just not that good.

Staal is a better matchup centerman than Kesler is. It's quite clear, actually - Kesler is good, but he's really, really overstated in the defensive category, and I love the guy.
